10 Most Loyal Dog Breeds

10 Most Loyal Dog BreedsWhile it’s true that dog is a human’s best friend, some breeds are more devoted to their caretakers than others. Many breeds fall in love with everyone they meet and really don’t seem to mind who is offering them a dog treat, taking them for a walk, or given them a belly rub, as long as they are getting attention!

However, there are many breeds that are insanely loyal to their masters; so much so that they would be willing to risk their lives to save them. Whether you require a service dog, a furry assistant to help you complete certain tasks, or you just want a pooch you can count on to always be by your side, the following breeds are among the most loyal in the world.

  1. The Collie

Remember Lassie, the famous dog that would alert the entire world when Timmy fell down the well? There’s a reason why! She was a Collie, and this breed is as loyal as they come. These dogs were bred to herd and love to have a task; however, they are also renowned for their devotion to their human companions. Collies have coarse coats that require regular grooming, so make sure you have a quality dog shampoo for baths and a sturdy dog brush to keep mats at bay.

  1. The German Shepherd

Another insanely loyal breed, it’s no wonder why the German Shepherd often assist law enforcement officials and help out in search and rescue missions. This large breed will stand by your side, no matter what, and will be waiting for you at the front door when you come home. Do be aware, however, this breed is genetically predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia. Feeding him a high-quality dog food for German Shepherds and offering him a dog joint supplement can help to prevent such issues.

  1. The Akita

According to the American Kennel Club, the Akita is a “profoundly loyal” breed. This dogs originated in Japan, where they were bred to hung bear, elk, and boar. These dogs thrive on their human companions, so if you are looking for a pooch that will always stand by you, this is a great fit for you. However, do be aware that Akitas can be aloof toward strangers and even apprehensive to a fault; therefore, socialization is extremely important. Take your Akita to a dog park – on a well-fitted dog harness, of course- so that he can interact with other humans and canines.

  1. The Brittany

This breed loves having a job to do and will go out of his way to please his owners. Bred as gundogs, the Brittany is extremely energetic and quite intelligent. They are also incredibly loyal and will develop a strong connection with the leader of his “human” pack. Make sure that you offer this pooch plenty of exercise to avoid boredom; puzzle toys for dogs, interactive dog toys, and automatic fetch machines are all great ways to keep this smart and energetic dog entertained.

  1. The Great Pyrenees

This large breed dog was bred to guard livestock, which is abundantly obvious, given his intense loyalty to his human companions. A Great Pyrenees will go out of his way to make sure that whomever it is he is guarding – whether it’s an adult, a child, or anyone else he is responsible for – is well-protected. This breed is so loyal, in fact, that it may suffer from separation anxiety. If your pooch does, medications for dogs that aim to treat separation anxiety can be effective.

  1. Saint Bernard

A massive, sturdy breed, the Saint Bernard is one of the most loyal dogs you can find. They are loyal to their human companions and pretty much anyone else they meet, so it’s no wonder why they are often used to assist in search and rescue missions! Do be aware, though, that this intensely devoted gentle giant, like other large breed dogs, does require a very well-balanced diet to offset health issues, such as joint problems. Feeding your pup a premium-quality food for large dogs from one of the most reputable dog food brands can help him avoid complications.

  1. The Dachshund

Thus far, the most loyal dogs mentioned on our list have been large breeds; however, if you are looking for a dog that has a smaller stature and is also incredibly loyal, than the Dachshund is an excellent option. This breed is highly protective of his pack and will go to great lengths to ensure that his human companions are well cared for. In fact, Dachshunds are so protective that they’ve been known to save their families from robberies, fires, and even large predator attacks! Due to their uniquely long bodies and short stature, this breed is prone to musculoskeletal complications. Offer your furry friend a premium-quality dog food for Dachshunds to ensure he’s getting the nutrient he needs to keep his joints strong and healthy.

  1. The Mastiff

Those who are searching for a large, loyal dog will adore the massive Mastiff. This breed is both ancient and giant; Caesar had one himself! They are intensely devoted to whomever they are charged with protecting, so it’s no wonder why they were used to protect palaces. This breed makes a fantastic guard dog, thanks to its intimidating size; however, they are quite gentle and are particularly good with young children.

  1. The Shetland Sheepdog

These dogs are often referred to as “human shadows”, which perfectly describes their loyalty. Also known as “Shelties”, this breed is very quick-witted, obedient, and fat. They bare a strong resemblance to their cousin, the Collie, and they share many of the same personality traits. Like a Collie, you’ll want to make sure that your Sheltie gets plenty of exercise and has tons of activity to prevent boredom. But, once he’s tired out, he’ll love curling up in his dog bed (right near you, of course) so he can get some much-needed rest.

  1. The American Staffordshire Terrier

Last, but most certainly not least, on our list of the most loyal dogs is the American Staffordshire terrier. They are famous for their incredibly friendly disposition and intense loyalty. However, and very unfortunately, many people with bad intentions turn this breed into a fighting dog because they are so willing to do whatever is asked of them to make their owners happy; even if that means fighting. With the right care, the American Staffordshire Terrier will make a fantastic addition to your family, as he gets along well with small children and other animals, too.
