These dogs are found at some shelters and rescues despite their purebred status. These are large dogs, and it is a good idea to bring them to homes with yards. These are independent dogs but also love spending time with their families.

Akbash History

Akbash Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowThis breed can trace back its roots to the period between 750 BC to 300 BC. It is a very old breed that both mastiffs and sighthounds have developed from. This dog was bred when the ancient people of Turkey began to breed dogs to guard their livestock.

This breed was first introduced to the United States of America in the 1970s. In 1998, the United Kennel Club (UKC) first recognized it to categorize it under the Guardian Dog Group. However, this breed has still not been recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Akbash Characteristics

These dogs appear only in white coats. They may even show a somewhat biscuit color near their heads. These are large dogs that look elegant. They have double coats, and these may be long or short. The tail and the back of the legs will have longer hair with a slight wave.

How Big to Akbash Get

The male dogs among the Akbash breed may grow to a height of between 27 to 33 inches. On the other hand, the females will grow anywhere between the heights of 27 to 31 inches. The male Akbash Dog weighs about 90 to 140 lbs. The females weigh about 80 to 120 lbs.

How Long Does Akbash Live

The Akbash Dog has a life expectancy of between 10 to 11 years. Ensure that they are cared for well so that they remain healthy for a long time.

How Much Does an Akbash Cost

The average Akbash puppy may cost between $700 to $900. If you are adopting it, you may pay about $300. This is the cost of caring for the puppy before you go ahead and adopt it. Make sure to pick a reputed breeder who will give you a healthy puppy.

Akbash Temperament/Personality

This breed is very gentle and is also observed to be protective of their families. They were first bred to protect livestock and hence exhibit the instincts of guard dogs even today. These are independent dogs. They like to have their own space every now and then.

They are not overly energetic but are extremely intelligent dogs. If they feel that anything is out of place, they will go ahead and bark. This is usually directed at strangers. However, they will not display any overly aggressive traits towards strangers either.

They are great at simply alerting you to any visitor. This dog also needs an authoritative owner who will be sensitive to what they need. If you have any other pets or dogs in your house, you should socialize the Akbash with them when they are puppies.

While stubborn with training, they also tend to pick up any new tasks you give them with ease. Many people also get the Akbash to act as service dogs and train them for the same. Hence, they make perfect guardian dogs as well.

Since these dogs are independent, they are perfect for busy households. You won’t have to worry about this breed suffering from separation anxiety when you are not around.

Caring for Akbash

It takes just some proper nutrition, exercise, and some care for your Akbash dog to thrive. Groom them well and give them enough time to keep both them and you satisfied.

Akbash Nutrition

You will have to feed your Akbash Dog a diet that has been specifically formulated for any large dogs that exhibit low energy levels. Speak to your veterinary doctor about their diet and stick to it. Overfeeding them with food and treats can quickly cause weight gain.

How to Groom an Akbash

The coat on an Akbash Dog is medium-length, and it is a double coat that is prone to moderate shedding. Go ahead and brush these dogs once or twice every week to keep unwanted dead hair off their coats and your furniture.

Akbash Activity Levels

These dogs do not enjoy a high level of activity. However, the puppies among these tend to be very active. Hence, you can go ahead and leave them to get their activity requirements in your yard. You can also take them for an hour-long walk each day.

Caring for Akbash

You should take your Akbash Dog to the veterinarian regularly. This will help them spot any health concerns quickly. Collaborate with your vet to develop a routine that will keep your dog’s exercise and diet routine consistent and in check.

You should also pay specific attention to the oral health of your Akbash. Make sure to regularly brush their teeth by following the recommendations that their vet has made. You should also trim the Akbash Dog’s nails. You can do this once or twice each month.

Akbash Health

This breed is a relatively healthy breed. However, it does suffer from a few diseases. You should lookout for any signs of hip dysplasia as these dogs are susceptible to it. You may notice pain and arthritis in this case. They may also suffer from hypothyroidism.

This is not a curable condition, but the vet will help you manage it with medication. Akbash Dogs may also suffer from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Many of these dogs are also prone to bloat or Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GDV).
