Basset Artesien Normand or BAN is a short-legged hound breed that originated in France. Sharing a common ancestry with Basset Hound, Basset Artesien Normand is a light and smaller version of the Hound family. Unlike Basset Hound, the dog is crossed with Bloodhounds to acquire more hunting capability and remain lighter-boned.

As hunting dogs, they mostly live in packs, making them highly affectionate and social with humans, especially children. They adapt to live well in large homes as well as apartments due to their short legs. You will make up your mind to adopt the little canine at first glance.

Basset Artesien Normand History

Basset Artesien Normand Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowBasset Artesien Normand is a pure breed that originated in 1870. The dog is descended from the many short-legged hounds who later descended from different scent hounds close to Bloodhound, displaying achondroplasia dwarfism. Therefore, the short-legged Basset Artesien Normand is employed by hunters as they easily fit into tight and small spaces.

Since then, two strains have developed. One had straight front legs known as Chien d’artois, and the other had crooked front legs known as Normand. In 1910, the breed club was founded, and they were named again in 1924. The dogs were generally bred to become hunting and companion dogs.
