Bengal Cat Breed InfoThe Bengal Cat is a hybrid cat breed produced from a mix of the spotted Egyptian Mau and the Asian Leopard cat. These marvelous cats have a distinct golden shimmer from their leopard ancestors; they also have several black markings like spots, arrowheads, and marbling. These cats are highly energetic and require a lot of exercise to stay fit.

Bengal Cat History

Harrison Weir’s ‘Our Cats and All About Them’ was the first book to mention a cross between the Asian Leopard cat and Domestic breed in 1889. These wild-looking cats were the brainchild of Jean Mill, who decided to produce a domestic cat with an appearance similar to wild cats. But the efforts of almost every breeder eventually stopped after one or two generations.

The Bengal breed didn’t become mainstream until the 1970s when Jean mill received a group of Bengal Cats bred specifically for genetic testing. The Bengal was registered as an official breed in 1983 when TICA officially recognized it.

Bengal Cat Key Facts

The Bengal Cat is one of the most exotic-looking cats; their distinct golden coat with various markings makes them similar in looks to wild cats. These beautiful cats have a unique feature; unlike most other cats, they love water.

Yes, you hear that right. Bengal Cats can surprise their owners by following them into the pool for a quick bath when the sun is shining too much. Among all the unique features of the Bengal Cat, the most distinct feature is its ability to learn tricks effortlessly. Their high intelligence enables them to adopt certain behavior which can astound their owners.

How Big Do Bengal Cats Get?

Bengal Cats are larger than your average small, medium-sized cat. They can be best described as large to medium in size. On average, a healthy Bengal will weigh between 8 – 15 pounds and reach a height of 13 – 16 inches.

Bengal Cat Lifespan

As a medium-large-sized cat, the Bengal cat may have a shorter lifespan than smaller cats. But generally, they are considered a healthy breed and can live between 12 – 16 years. You can ensure that they live towards the upper end of this scale by taking proper care of them and ensuring they are always on a leash or harness when you take them out for a walk.

How Much Does A Bengal Cat Cost?

A Bengal cat is not commonly found, so you might have to pay a lot of money to find a good, healthy, and pure Bengal. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere between $1,500 – $3,000. It would help if you also considered the price of accessories which can range between $50 – $100 or more.

Bengal Cat Personality

At first glance, you may feel that this exotic-looking breed may not be friendly at all, but that’s not the case. These gorgeous cats are usually very friendly and love to play with their owners, just like other domestic cats. With that being said, these cats are not for everyone, especially first-time owners.

The Bengal cat is intelligent, energetic, and curious. So, they require a lot of time and attention to prevent them from getting bored and developing unhealthy habits to deal with this boredom. They are also friendly with other pets and children, especially older children, who can play with them and keep them engaged.

Caring For A Bengal Cat

The Bengal Cat is a unique breed that is super intelligent and energetic. They require a lot of attention and care to stay healthy. Keep reading to find out all you need to know about caring for your Bengal Cat.

Bengal Cat Nutrition

The Bengal cat is a carnivore, so it is important to feed them the right kind of food, which includes a lot of protein. You can feed them high-protein cat food, but it is generally a good idea to include some fresh raw meat in their diets.

It is best to ensure that the meat is unprocessed and fresh. It would be best never to feed your Bengal things like chocolate, raw eggs, avocadoes, and liver. These food items contain chemicals that can harm your cat.

How To Groom A Bengal Cat?

The Bengal cat is known for its short, soft, and luxurious coat. This coat is generally easy to groom, brushing no more than once or twice per week. Regular brushing ensures that your cat doesn’t shed too much and leaves fewer dust bunnies around the house.

You should also ensure basic care, including nail-trimming, bathing, and basic inspection. Look out for sores or spots in their ears, indicating an infection. Brushing their teeth should also be an important part of their grooming routine.

Bengal Cat Activity Levels

The Bengal Cat is highly energetic and requires a lot of activity to stay fit and healthy. They love to play and interact with their owners and can become stressed if left alone for long periods. So, it is essential to keep them busy with at least 1 – 2 hours of playtime per day.

If you are usually busy and not home most of the time, it is good to get two Bengal cats instead of one. You can also buy interactive toys which can keep them engaged and help them exhaust their energy.

Bengal Cat Health Concerns

The Bengal cat is usually healthy if cared for properly, but they can develop several health issues if you are not careful. One of the biggest issues with this breed is problems related to the heart. The most common is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. In this disease, the heart walls of the cat cats become abnormally thick, which makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood all across the cat’s body.

Another common disease in the Bengal cat is HCM, a genetic disease. And there is no certain way to find out that your cat has this disease as there is no genetic testing available. Your best bet is to take your cat to a cardiologist and get an echocardiogram done.
