Senior Dog Bed Buying Guide

Best Dog Bed For Older Dog Review

Above are only five of the many options available to you on the market. As you browsed through the recommendations, you probably saw many different terms and features for you to choose from and wondered what they meant. I will continue on to explain each of the terms you want to know when buying a dog bed and why you would want them in your dog’s bed. When buying a bed be sure to measure your dog properly to be sure the bed will fit them as it should!

Orthopedic

This is a term you see a lot of when searching for dog beds for older dogs and for good reason. The term orthopedic is used, in this case, for dog products that align and alleviate muscle and joint pain caused my them being out of place of needing pressure to relieve that pain. Generally if you see an orthopedic dog bed it is a safe bet for joint, muscle or similar pains in your dog, but always read the description to check the foam width or density.

Memory Foam

Memory foam has its name because once you lay on it for a while it keeps your shape. This is good for alleviating joint pain as the bed puts pressure on all the joints and muscles that are out of place and in pain because of it.

Gel Foam

Gel foam is a relatively new addition to dog beds. It is exactly what it sounds like, although most beds are gel infused foam and not actual gel as to lower risk of dogs getting sick from chewing up their bed. The gel beds have the bonus of controlling the temperature, which is great if you live in extreme weather conditions. In hotter weather it keeps your pup cool and in cooler weather it does the opposite. This is good as it stops the cold from reaching into your pup’s joints and causing any more pain.

Waterproof

Anyone who has owned a dog bed knows that they get dirty and they get wet. It doesn’t matter how much you try to keep to keep the bed away from the water bowl, your pup will always bring the rain water in and soak it. Waterproof beds are good because they are made to absorb of repel the water, this lowers the risk of mold growing on the bed. Mold is bad for any animal’s lungs but it is especially so for elderly animals as their bodies aren’t able to fight off the irritants mold lets off like younger pups.

Hypoallergenic

Hypoallergenic is a term you see a lot in many different areas of products, not just the dog industry. Hypoallergenic is something that lowers risk of allergic reactions in your pup. An example of hypoallergenic dog beds is if the cover repels dust mites and other irritants. By repelling those things, it is lowering the amount of irritants that are going into your dog’s lungs.

Removable Cover

Having a removable cover is insanely useful for cleaning purposes. However when you see this label on your product be sure to read the description thoroughly, as some manufacturers make their covers removable but not machine washable. It is a headache to hand wash the cover, so be sure to check that the product is machine washable as well as removable.

Machine Washable

There isn’t really an explanation for this feature. Anything that is machine washable in relation to your dog products is a bonus. Dogs love to get dirty and the busy pet owner, that’d be you, usually doesn’t have a lot of time to constantly rewash their beds or clothes. The ability to throw their supplies into a washing machine greatly cuts down on time you spend cleaning.

Non Slip Bottom

The Non Slip bottom is a very important part of buying a bed for an elderly dog. If your dog is like mine, she can’t wait to jump onto her bed. Unfortunately, many beds aren’t made with non slip material so the bed will be sent sliding. Thankfully, my dog hasn’t injured herself from smacking into the wall behind her, but a non slip bottom is a much safer option for your pup.
