Newfoundland Dog Brush Buyer’s Guide

Dog brushes do not come cheap, which is why it is important to know what to look for in a brush before buying one. There are many excellent options available on the market; yet, not all of them will be right for your Newfoundland.

Brush Type

Newfoundlands have hairy coats and an even denser undercoat. This means that they require sturdy brush that can handle the waves of fur they are buried under. Pin brushes work best for Newfoundlands; they bear spaced apart bristles which do well with particularly dense coats.

An undercoat rake may also help remove tangles from the undercoat, particularly in double-coated dogs like Newfoundlands. Rakes help remove mats, too; double rowed versions are best for the undercoat, while regular single length options do well for general, everyday use.

A slicker brush is also worth investing in, but a pin brush is absolutely necessary. Slicker brushes are used to remove mats and dead hair from your Newfoundland’s heavy undercoat, which would otherwise grow denser with dirt, residue, and shed hair over time.

Bristle Length

Pin brushes tend to have longer teeth than the average dog brush, which is extremely helpful in the case of Newfoundlands, who have thicker coats than most dog breeds. These long teeth can easily reach the dog’s skin and detangle the undercoat, which would otherwise be hard to reach because of the thick and dense upper coat.

Brush Handle

Your dog brush’s handle should be easy to hold on to and use; it should not slip out of your hand when you are holding on to it, because that may cause additional problems. Also, a brush that keeps slipping from your hand will make it difficult for you to brush through your Newfoundland’s coat effectively, and you might just miss out on some mats and tangles that need addressing.

For this reason, some people appreciate using a brush that contains a silicone gel handle, or a similar material. Such non-slip materials make for excellent handles and make it much easier for you to brush your Newfoundland. Remember, the better your grip on the handle is, the better the grooming experience will be!
