Dog Coat for Large Dogs Buyer’s Guide

Our buying guide reviews the best coats for large dogs on the market so you can choose the right one for your furry friend.  The following features are included on most dog coats and will help you to choose which features you need for your situation.

Materials

Dog coats are made with a wide range of materials, depending on what the main use of the coat will be for. Many of the warmer coats tend to have a fleece lining, while the waterproof ones tend to have an exterior with polyester. Other materials that can be found in the coats include closure materials, which we will look at later, adjustable straps, leash access points, and some include elastic around the legs and/or back.

Style

When it comes to style, in this sense we are not talking about the pattern of material, but rather how the coat fits, or more specifically how it goes on. There are two main styles that we have seen repeat and that is the wrap style, where you just wrap it around your dog and fasten it. The other style is the leg-hole style, where you need to put your dogs’ legs through the leg-holes and then either attach it on his belly, or back. If you have an older, arthritic dog, we suggest using the wrap as there is less movement on their joints.

Closure

Most coats have a Velcro closing as it’s easy to get on and off. Some styles do come with other closures, such as snaps, buttons, or buckles. No one closure is necessarily better than the other, and it really does come down to the owners’ preference at that point as all of them are built for comfort for your dog.
