Whether it is to allow time for recovery after surgery or due to an injury, dogs need to wear cones to prevent them from licking or scratching a wound or incision. Dog Cone Buyer’s Guide

Choosing the right dog cone for your pup is an important part of helping your dog recover from injury or surgery.  While plastic cones can be purchased for less than $10, one of the softer alternatives is well worth the extra cost, as it means less stress for your dog and a quicker road to recovery. Prices range from about $15 to $30, depending on the style and size you need.

Our buying guide reviews the best dog cones on the market so you can choose the right cone for your dog.  The following features are important to consider and will help you to choose which cone is ultimately best for your dog’s health.

Material

Since your cone will need to be cleaned once a day, choose a cone with an easy-to-clean material. Most of the wide, cone-style models have a waterproof cover that can be wiped down by hand. The soft, donut-style cones have a fleece or microfiber cover that can be removed and machine washed. Choose a material that is soft and will not cause irritation if it rubs or chafes your dog’s neck.

Attachment

Choosing a cone with secure straps is imperative to prevent the cone from coming off. Velcro straps are popular as they remain secure when in place but can be easily adjusted to ensure a perfect fit. Models with inner loops can also help the cone stay in place by attaching to your dog’s collar. There are also dog cones available that slip over the pup’s head like a shirt, and secure in place with a stopper.

Size and Fit

It is imperative that you measure your dog’s neck-to-snout length and neck circumference when choosing the right size of cone for your dog. This is the length from where your dog’s collar naturally sits, to the edge of their nose. If the nose extends beyond the edge of the cone, it will not prevent the dog from licking or biting the affected area. Also carefully measure your dog’s neck circumference. If your pup is between sizes, always go with the larger size. Finally, choose a cone that is adjustable, in order to get the right fit for your dog every time.
