Choosing a dog harness for your Finnish Lapphund is an important investment since you will likely be outside with him running and exercising every day.  A well-designed harness will not hurt your Lappie’s neck, as it diffuses the pressure from pulling over his chest area.  This is safer on your pup’s neck and trachea and allows you more control than a collar alone.  There are many styles on the market, designed for different uses and climates, so choose a few that you can rotate through, depending on what you need on any specific day.

Purpose and Design

In the early days, a harness with a front-leash clip will be handy to train your Finnish Lapphund not to pull.  His history suggests he may want to run as he pleases, so no-pull training will be necessary.  Attaching the leash to the front of the harness forces your pup to the side when he pulls forward.  He quickly learns that pulling will not get him where he wants to go.  Once no-pull training is complete, you can attach your leash to the back of the harness, allowing him more freedom to move quickly forward.  If your Finnish Lapphund is used to walking with a harness, or doesn’t need any additional training, a harness with only a back leash clip is sufficient for your pup, but many harnesses have both.
