Dog Harness for Great Pyrenees Buyer’s Guide

Choosing a dog harness for your Great Pyrenees is essential since you will need to be able to control him on your daily walks. Training him to properly walk on a harness will be important. As a protector, his instinct will be to scare away any potential threats to you, so you may find he wants to pull or lunge in the beginning. A good quality harness with no-pull training clips will help you and him learn to walk safely together. A harness is preferred over a collar for this breed, since he is likely to pull. A collar could hurt his neck or trachea, especially if he lunges away from you.

Our buying guide reviews the best dog harnesses for Great Pyrenees on the market so you can choose the right harness for your dog.  The following features should be considered and will help you to choose which features you need on a harness for your Great Pyrenees.

Materials

The harness you choose for your Great Pyrenees needs to be very durable and strong. There are generally two styles that will work for your Pyr. The strappy harnesses are made with double-stitched, tightly woven webbed nylon straps. These are a good choice because they are lightweight and cool for your double-coated Pyr. The vest style harnesses also have a lightweight mesh or nylon material that is usually padded with neoprene for comfort. Leather is another great option, for durability and strength.  Any slider adjusters or clips should be high quality, so they do not break or unclip. D-rings should be made of durable welded metal for added security.

Control

If you have complete no-pull training with your Great Pyrenees, you are safe to use the rear leash clip on the harness. This will give you less control but will allow your Pyr to move forward as he pleases. Prior to that, the front-leash clip is to be used. This clip attaches your leash to the front, so when your pup pulls forward, it turns him to the side, not allowing him to go in the direction he wants.  Over time, this no-pull training is effective. Finally, most large-dog harnesses should have a control handle on the back, for keeping him in place when you need to.
