Thanks to their large necks, Mastiffs are great candidates for wearing a harness as opposed to a collar for training or daily walks.  A harness provides more comfort for your Mastiff and if he is a big puller, it may even be a safer choice than a collar.  Harnesses will also give you the control you need, when you need it. Dog harnesses for Mastiffs come in a wide variety of styles and designs, so choosing the right one takes a little bit of time and research to find the perfect one.

Dog Harness for Mastiffs Buyer’s Guide

Choosing a dog harness for your Mastiff is an important investment for a pet parent, since it is something you will likely use on a daily basis.  A good quality harness is actually quite affordable, however, so you should be able to find one that you and your Mastiff both love at a good price.  Harnesses are especially useful for Mastiffs because they provide a more comfortable and safer alternative to a collar, especially if your pup loves to pull or chase other animals.

Our buying guide reviews the best dog harnesses for Mastiffs on the market so you can choose the right harness for your dog.  The following features should be considered and will help you to choose which features you need on a harness for your Mastiff.

Materials

The harness you choose for your Mastiff needs to be very durable and strong.  A top-quality, heavy-duty nylon is a common material, because it is lightweight and easy to clean.  The vest style harnesses also have a lightweight mesh or nylon material, that is often padded with neoprene for weather-resistance and comfort.  Leather is another great option, for durability and strength.  Clips, D-rings and buckles should be high-quality and quick-release, or metal so they do not unclip easily.

Control

If your Mastiff does not pull or lunge, you can consider a back-clip harness.  This will give you less control but will give your Mastiff more freedom to move as he pleases.  If you are training or want more control, a front-clip is better, at least in the beginning.  This clip attaches your leash to the front, so when the Mastiff pulls forward, it turns him to the side, not allowing him to go in the direction he wants.  Over time, this no-pull training is effective.  Finally, most large-dog harnesses should have a control handle on the back, for keeping him in place when you need to.
