Dog Muzzle for Great Pyrenees Buyer’s Guide

Choosing a muzzle for your Great Pyrenees can be tricky due to his large size, but there are plenty of good options on the market. Most importantly, you should always ensure your Pyr can breathe, pant and drink water. These temperature-regulating functions are very important for your heavy-coated Great Pyrenees, as he needs the ability to stay cool. The muzzle should obviously be comfortable for your Pyr, but it’s important to remember that dogs should not be muzzled for extended periods of time. As always, follow the manufacturers recommendations on sizing carefully, for a safe and secure fit.

Our buying guide reviews the best dog muzzles for Great Pyrenees on the market so you can choose the right muzzle for your dog.  The following features are included on most muzzles and will help you to choose which features you need on a muzzle for your Great Pyrenees.

Sizing and Fit

Great Pyrenees have a large, broad snout, so getting the right fit is important. To measure the circumference, use a soft measuring tape and measure from one inch below his eyeline. Then, add 1.5 to two inches to allow for adjustments. The length is also important – measure from the tip of his nose to a ½ inch below his eyes. Your Great Pyrenees will likely need a large or extra-large size, but always refer to the manufacturer’s sizing recommendations. The muzzle should be fully adjustable with several adjustment points. An overhead strap will help keep the muzzle in place, as will a collar connector loop that allows the muzzle to be attached directly to his existing collar.

Materials

Muzzles can be made from a variety of materials and no one material is best for a Great Pyrenees. It depends ultimately on your intended purpose for the muzzle. For training or to prevent aggression towards other animals, a cage-style muzzle is best. This can be made from a lightweight metal, rubber or TPR, or leather — all of which are durable and strong enough for your pup. Cage-style muzzles offer excellent ventilation – an important feature for your Great Pyr, especially in warmer climates. Another very common material is nylon, usually in the form of a slip-style muzzle. These are effective, provided they are made with high quality nylon or mesh and are double stitched. A soft pad around the snout is common and helps prevent hot spots. Clasps and buckles can be metal or plastic but must be durable and good quality for long term use.
