Greyhounds are loving and loyal pets, but sometimes need a gentle reminder about certain behaviors.  A humane muzzle is often the answer to your Greyhound’s unwanted instincts, such as nipping or chasing small animals.  Muzzles can also be a handy tool when visiting new places for the first time, such as the vet, or to prevent your Greyhound from licking a wound.  The good news is that Greyhounds as a breed are very accustomed to wearing muzzles, thanks to their training as racing dogs.  Choose a quality muzzle that will be comfortable and long-lasting for a variety of different situations.

Dog Muzzle for Greyhounds Buyer’s Guide

Choosing the right muzzle for your Greyhound is an important decision, because it needs to be comfortable and safe for your pup.  An ill-fitting muzzle can be dangerous for your Greyhound, or it may slip off and not fulfill its purpose.  There are many humane and affordable muzzles on the market, so you might want to get a couple different ones until you find one that you are happy with.  More restrictive basket-style muzzles are good for aggressive Greyhounds or for training, while lightweight slip-style muzzles are best for quick muzzles in different situations.  Remember that although the muzzle needs to be comfortable enough to wear regularly, they are not meant to be worn for extended periods of time.

Our buying guide reviews the best dog muzzles for Greyhounds on the market so you can choose the right muzzle for your dog.  The following features are included on most muzzles and will help you to choose which features you need on a muzzle for your Greyhound.

Sizing and Fit

To get the right fit, start by measuring the circumference of your Greyhound’s snout.  With a soft measuring tape, measure from one inch below his eyeline, then add 1.5 to 2 inches for comfort.  For length, measure from the tip of his nose to ½ inch below his eyes.  Then, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for their sizes to choose the right one.  The muzzle should be snug so it does not easily come off, but it should not be so tight that it does not allow him to breathe or pant, as this is an important cooling mechanism for your dog.  Choose a muzzle that is adjustable around the back, and around the snout as well. An overhead strap and collar connector loops can help keep the muzzle in place.

Materials

Although less common, you can still find wire cage-style muzzles. If this is your preference, choose a cage with lightweight metal and leather straps for comfort.  Alternatively, rubber and leather cage muzzles are also available.  These are durable and provide excellent ventilation, especially for active training sessions.  Slip-style muzzles are generally made from nylon, mesh or a combination of the two.  These materials provide excellent durability and are comfortable.  Look for a muzzle with a soft comfort strip or neoprene padding around the snout to prevent chafing.  Straps are usually nylon, with plastic quick-release buckles.  Ensure straps are double stitched and the buckle is good quality, so it is not easily removed.
