Swedish Vallhund Dog Muzzle Buying Guide
The Swedish Vallhund is renowned for its lively spirit and chattery persona. Not only will it chase away any cat that will dare to cross the yard, but it will also excel at any dog competition. It’s an early learner, capable of learning tricks at just eight weeks of age. But, when it comes to vet checks, that’s when the real problems begin. Swedish Vallhunds have a tendency to bark and display a mild temper. To limit their headstrong temper, it’s a good idea to wear a dog muzzle. However, before you decide to get one, you should consider a few factors.
Getting the Right Measurements
There is no “one-size-fits-all” dog muzzle. Some can be wider, and others a little bit tighter. Depending on the material used, the measurements will vary. You will have to assess your dog’s snout to find the right product. To start, determine the length from your dog’s eye to the tip of the nose. The circumference comes next. That’s the length below the eye to the nose. For a cozy fit, add a ¼ of additional length to the circumference. You will then get the right measurements for a smaller Swedish Vallhund. For a bigger dog, add from ½ an inch to 1 inch. Otherwise, the product won’t fit.
Picking the Muzzle Type
You can either go for a basket or an occlusion dog muzzle. The first option is designed for extended use. The dog can also drink and eat from this one freely. The second option is meant to be used briefly. It’s more restrictive, and the dog can’t eat or drink with it.
Adapting
Most Swedish Vallhunds may refuse to wear the mask. This is typical behavior. With slow and careful usage, the dog can get used to wearing it. But, it may take some time and practice. That doesn’t mean you’ve purchased the wrong mask; it means the dog needs a little time to learn how to feel comfortable with it.
