Dog Shampoo for Mange Buyer’s Guide

There are several shampoos on the market for dogs with mange so sometimes it can be confusing when trying to decide what is best for your dog. There are a few specific things you will want to look for when considering a shampoo. Mange can be very contagious, so we suggest using these in addition to seeing your veterinarian, and not instead of.

Active Ingredients

In many cases the active ingredients are usually 2% Chlorohexidine and 1-2% Ketoconazole. While these words sound like harmful chemicals, they are in fact 100% natural. Both are powerful and have their own jobs when it comes to healing your beloved pets. Chlorohexidine is medicated and used to relieve skin infections and reduce inflammation. Ketoconazole on the other hand manages bacteria and yeast and will promote healthier skin and coats.

Other Ingredients

Depending on the shampoo you choose, some of the other ingredients you may find are things like aloe, oatmeal, essential oils, lanolin, etc. Generally, these ingredients are used to aid in soothing the itch and pain associated with mange, and other disorders. While killing the bacteria is what gets rid of the odor overall, these also help with keeping your dog smelling good while undergoing treatment.

Age

It is not recommended to use these shampoos on dogs under 12 weeks of age. There are two types of mange, sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange. Sarcoptic mange is the one that most people are familiar with and is contagious. Demodectic mange is not contagious, nor harmful in most cases, and is passed from mom to pup in the first few days after birth and then are generally always present. Only if the numbers get out of hand does it become a problem. By using medicated shampoos, you can interfere with the normal flora of puppies if used to soon.

Size

Once a dog is 12 weeks of age, these shampoos can be used on any size dog. The larger your dog obviously the quicker you will go through the shampoo, so if you have a larger breed dog, we suggest getting 2 bottles.
