The Border Jack is a crossbreed dog produced by crossing a Border Collie with a Jack Russell Terrier. Originating in the United States a few decades ago, this dog is fairly modern with less documented history. As a hybrid, the Border Jack will acquire the characteristics of both its parents.

Like the Border Jack’s excellence, the agility sports and flyball, this hybrid is also good at playing these games. It is highly active because both its parents are agile. The body is muscular and strongly built with a small size. As far as the temperament is concerned, it is a courageous, loyal, independent, and playful dog.

Border Jack History

Border Jack Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowDue to the little-known history of Border Jack, we are taking account of its parental history.  History tells that the Border Collie traces back its origin to first century England. At this time, the invading Romans brought their shepherding breeds with them, and later, the Vikings came with their smaller spitz-like dogs. Both these dogs combined, and Border Collie was introduced as a new dog breed.

The Jack Russell Terrier can be followed back to the mid-1800s when a person named “Russell” bred it in Devonshire, England. So, the dog is named after its first breeder. Typically, Jack Russell Terrier was used for flushing out foxes and other animals living in lairs without hurting them. The breeders thought to breed Border Collie and the Jack Russell Terrier to get a breed that can perform very well in sports flyball and other related sports.

Border Jack Characteristics

As a hybrid dog, the Border Jack’s appearance is a mix of both the parents. Its compact body, little head with pendant ears are just like Jack Russell Terrier. Its almond eyes pointed muzzle, and curious expressions are coming from the Border Collie parent side. Other characteristics are listed below.

How Big to Border Jack Get

Your grown-up Border Jack has a medium stature standing 16 to 22 inches tall, while its weight ranges from 22 to 32 pounds.

How Long Does Border Jack Live

Under normal living conditions, your Border Jack can live a life of 12-15 years. You can make it tip this scale with its good and proper care.

How Much Does a Border Jack Cost

The hybrid dogs are always less expensive than the original or purebred dogs. You can get a Border Jack for almost $700 to $800. Not buying a dog is better than buying from an unreputable breeder.

Border Jack Temperament/Personality

The Border Jack acquires some of its qualities from the Border Collie, others from the Jack Russell Terrier, while some of its traits blend both parent’s personalities. This hybrid canine has an inquisitive nature that always keeps it engaged in different activities.

It is a skill full and dynamic canine that always wants to be entertained and active. It turns out to be a friendly and loyal dog that gives the foremost priority to its human family about its terms with the family. It is an easy-to-train dog, but the training must not be monotonous. It would help if you tried different ways and activities to condition your dog as you want.

Moreover, the Border Jack is friendly and playful with the children, but its high energy is a caution for its supervision while interacting with the kids. It is likely to be wary of strangers and other pets if you didn’t provide it early socialization of humans and other pets.

Caring for Border Jack

Things like a dog’s diet, exercise, grooming, and living conditions come under a dog’s care category. In this section, we have discussed how to care for Border Jack in detail.

Border Jack Nutrition

This medium-sized but highly energetic dog needs a good amount of food per day. Its diet must include the right number of proteins, healthy fats, and carbs. Border Jack requires 2-3 cups full of good quality dog diet in a day. Split this meal into 5-6 quick meals for best digestion.

How to Groom a Border Jack

Border Jack is not fully hypoallergenic; rather, it is a moderate level shedder. Brush its hair with a metal brush having firm bristles. A good brushing routine helps decrease the shedding rate, making it easy for the members in your home with allergies. Good hygiene maintenance of your pup is necessary not only for the dog but also for you and your family.

Border Jack Activity Levels

Your Border Jack has massive amounts of energy to consume. It not only burns off the energy with having an exercise but also satisfies its joyful nature by jumping, chasing, and playing for hours. It would be even happy to do this fun with its human fellows.

Caring for Border Jack

Border Jack is a medium-sized canine with high dietary and energy levels. It would be best to provide this dog with an all-time activity like giving toys, or it will be found scratching the surfaces. You will be amazed to know that this dog can incredibly live in an apartment despite these energy levels.

However, you must take it outside for some fresh air daily. As it can adapt to urban and rural environments, you can keep it anywhere (protecting from extreme cold and hot climates). Other care lies in its health that is given below.

Border Jack Health

Suggested by its long life span, this dog can live a life having no health issues as it is not prone to serious diseases. However, the common health issues which it can have are Cataract, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Cerebellar Abiotrophy, Deafness, Hip Dysplasia, Collie Eye Anomaly, etc.

It is a genetically healthier breed that can remain healthy and hardy if you take it to the veterinary examination routinely. The interval of this visit must not exceed four months.
