The breed gained considerable leverage in Saint Germain en Laye, which is also the main reason for its name.

Originally the breed was a hunting breed, but over the years, it became tamer. Its qualities evolved through generations and eventually became better suited to houses. In 1863 it became even more popular because of its exhibition in the first French dog show. The FCI accepted it in 1954, almost a decade later. About half a decade later, in 2006, the UKC accepted it into its ranks. This breed is yet to be accepted by the AKC.
