Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix 101Have you heard of the Rottbull? This hybrid breed is a wonderful mix of the energetic Bull Terrier and the steadfast Rottweiller which was developed to get the best from both parent breeds. While the Rottweiler has roots in the Roman Empire and originally served as a herding and working dog, Bull Terriers come from England and were once used for dog fighting.

In this article, we share all you need to know about the Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix, a large breed that can be a wonderful companion dog.

What is the Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix?

As mentioned, this mixed breed is a cross between the Rottweiler and the Bull Terrier (and shouldn’t be confused with the Staffie Bullweiler, a cross with the Staffordshire bull terrier, or the American Staffordshire terrier, and the American pit bull terrier). While the Bull Terrier is smaller compared to the Rottie, they are just as protective and strong, and their offspring will do well with other dogs and children when given early socialization. These strong dogs are playful and loyal and will come with a short, flat coat.

History of the Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix

Before we talk about caring for this breed, it’s important to learn about its history; we don’t know much about this hybrid yet because it’s still relatively new, but we do know about its parents. The Bull Terrier may look cute and funny with its oval-shaped face but it was once bred for dogfighting; thankfully, blood sports were outlawed by the 1830s. When they were no longer used for blood sports, these canines were raised to be more gentle and calm, resulting in the loving dogs they are today.

The Rottweiler originated from Germany and resulted from a combination of the Roman Molossus dogs and native dogs from South Germany. These dogs come from a town named ‘das Rote Wil’ (the red tile), where they also got their name from — these dogs almost became extinct until 1901 when the first standards for the breed were created. They were recognized as a purebred dog by the American Kennel Club in 1931; today, they are the 9th most popular dog breeds in the United States.

Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix Appearance

The Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix is a medium to large dog that can stand between 17 to 26 inches tall and weigh between 48 to 88 pounds. It may inherit the tan face marks seen in its Rottweiler parent and may also get a short, smooth coat that comes in the following colors:

  • Black
  • White
  • Brown
  • Fawn
  • Brindle

This dog will tend to have a muscular body, with wide shoulders and a compact build, and will have longer legs than the Bull Terrier. Some puppies will come with the oval face of their Bull Terrier parent while other pups will get the short and flat muzzles of their Rottweiler parent. These cute dogs will have brown eyes and black noses, and they come with powerful jaws — because there’s no standard for how these canines should look, they come in all shapes and sizes.

Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix Temperament

Since these mixed-breed dogs combine the traits of both parents, you can expect them to be intelligent dogs who are brave, loyal, and protective of their families. Because of its herding background, the Rottbull may show strong territorial behavior and will be wary of strangers, so it will need consistent training and early socialization to help it become an obedient pet. These powerful and robust dogs will need consistent and experienced leadership to help them achieve their potential as wonderful canine partners.

It’s also important to note that they are energetic dogs that will need dedicated time for exercise and training to help them stay physically and mentally challenged. With the right training and socialization, these pups can be a great addition to any family.

Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix Care

Because not all dogs are created equal, a potential owner should know about the needs of the Bull Terrier Rottweiler mix before they even consider purchasing or adopting one. Below are some of the things you’ll need to consider before taking one of these mixed breeds.

Nutrition

It’s essential to feed your Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix two meals a day to help prevent bloat, and make sure not to make sudden changes in their diet which can cause diarrhea. If you want to introduce new food into their diet, be sure to do it gradually by starting with small portions, and slowly increasing the amount over a few days. Look for food that’s tailored to your pup’s size, age, and activity levels to ensure it gets optimal nutrition; start with our list of best dog foods here.

Any food you choose should come with essential nutrients that dogs need such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals in appropriate amounts. Avoid letting your dog eat human foods since these are among the worst foods that they can eat. Implementing portion control is a great way to maintain a healthy weight for your pup.

Grooming

Fortunately, the Rottweiler Bull Terrier dog is a low-maintenance breed for a large-sized dog; their grooming needs are minimal. Even so, they are moderate shedders so be prepared to give them daily brushing to remove any loose hair and to keep their coat in great condition. Because they tend to have sensitive skin, it’s best to use shampoo that’s specifically designed for their skin.

It will also help to check your dog’s nails regularly and trim them as required; when they grow too long, their nails can cause discomfort and even injury when left unchecked. Moreover, their ears should be checked once every week to ensure they’re clean and to prevent infections. Finally, brushing their teeth regularly every week can help to maintain good oral hygiene and protect them from gum disease.

Exercise

While this mixed breed will come with high energy levels, it’s also prone to overeating and can gain weight easily, so giving it daily exercise is important. Giving them two 30-minute walks each day should be enough exercise for them but they will also enjoy running freely around the yard or going for a hike. Going out swimming will be a great treat for this energetic dog and if you plan to give them regular exercise, it’s important not to leave them outdoors since they won’t do well in hot and humid weather.

Training

Your Bull Terrier Rottweiler mix will need early training and socialization to ensure that it becomes comfortable in a wide range of situations and environments. Doing this will help your puppy learn the right way to interact with people, other pets, and new experiences. The best way to do this is by starting dog training the moment you take it home and expose them to as many different places, people, and things as possible.

Consistent training can help them become a great guard dog and will help them understand when there’s a potential danger. Make sure to encourage good behavior through positive reinforcement such as rewards like treats and even belly rubs. When done properly, training can help your pooch become a well-rounded and well-mannered companion for years to come.

Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix Health Problems

Much like any other mixed breeds, the Bull Terrier Rottweiler mix may also suffer from a range of health issues such as elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia, which are common conditions of the joints that may cause lameness, pain, and decreased mobility. They’re also prone to developing cataracts which can cause the eye to become cloudy which could lead to blindness. Finally, bloat is also a risk factor for these dogs, so it’s a good idea to take them to your vet regularly to keep them healthy and to check for any potential health concerns.

Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix with Family

As discussed above, these dogs can be wonderful family members when given proper training and because of their eagerness to please their owners, they can be terrific companion animals even for young children. Their devotion and unwavering loyalty will surely help during both good and bad times, and because they’re so loving and affectionate, they will fit into any family that accepts them into their homes. This dog can be the right breed for those willing to give them all their food, exercise, training, and grooming needs.

Finding Your Bull Terrier Rottweiler Mix

The first thing to do when looking to add the right puppy to your family is to find a responsible breeder. You can try looking through the AKC marketplace where you may find dog breeders that pass their standards for ethical breeding. Another option is to look for rescue dogs that you can adopt from shelters and rescue organizations; dedicated rescues may also bring in mixes of their parent breeds.

Conclusion

Potential owners will be happy to know that the Bull Terrier Rottweiler can be the right dog for them provided that they’re given early training and socialization. This loyal companion can be the new best friend of all dog owners, but they will need the same care and attention that we would give ourselves because they’re so energetic and playful.
