The Chiwoxy is a curious, intelligent, and feisty Mix that results from breeding a Chihuahua with a Wire-Fox Terrier. It is also called the “Wire Chiwoxy” and is a good watchdog, originally bred to be a family pet.

Now, as they say, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” don’t get fooled by the size of this interesting breed. They may be small or toy-sized, but they sure have a sensitive, graceful, and territorial demeanor, and they will not think twice before barking and taking action if they suspect any suspicious activity. That’s intense!

The Chiwoxys are active dogs who are always eager to learn. They may snap too quickly if they feel like they’re being teased, harassed, or threatened. So, the key is to never mess with a Chiwoxy! But hey, they’re really cute and tend to show love and affection towards people they like.

Chiwoxy History

Chiwoxy Dog Breed Information – All You Need To KnowThe parent breeds need to be studied in order to understand Chiwoxys better because they are a relatively modern breed. So let’s get to it, shall we?

The Chihuahuas are known as the smallest dog breed on the face of planet Earth. One of my favorite pieces of information is that this small canine hails from the Chihuahua state in Mexico, hence the name! In addition to that interesting fact, the Chihuahuas held a frightening and firm place in Mexico back in the day. Some, however, believe that they were first seen in Egypt about 3000 years ago, while some may tell you that the breed started in the 1500s in China.

The Wire-Fox Terrier is another dog with a mysterious past. Some say the breed came from Durham, Wales, and Derbyshire, whereas others say it came from England. What is known is that these dogs were mainly used for the hunting of vermin and foxes in the 1800s. They were first considered Smooth-Fox Terriers and weren’t distinguished from them until 1984.

Chiwoxy Characteristics

The Chiwoxys are small, toy-sized dogs that come in many colors such as white, black, red, brown, and fawn. Their coats have a wiry and corded texture, and the length may vary between short and long. They have big, alert eyes that complement their confident expression, and they could be brown or amber in color.

How Big Do Chiwoxys Get?

The average male Chiwoxy grows up to be about 8-9 inches big and weighs around 7-10 pounds. On the other hand, the average female Chiwoxy grows up to be about 7-8 inches big and weighs around 6-9 pounds.

How Long Does A Chiwoxy Live?

The average lifespan of a Chiwoxy is 12-15 years. It can reach its maximum age if given proper care, good nutrition, and enough exercise.

How Much Does A Chiwoxy Cost?

A Chiwoxy can cost you around $800-$1500. Other expenses include basic necessities such as collar and leash, veterinarian exam, shots, deworming, pet insurance, clipping, etc. These can go up to $480.

Annual medical expenses can go up to $500-$600 and include flea prevention, vaccinations, etc., and non-medical expenses can go up to $600-$800 and include professional grooming, license, basic training, food, toys, etc.

Chiwoxy Temperament/Personality

The Chiwoxy is a fun, affectionate dog but only around its trusted companions. They’re not among the friendliest of dogs and shouldn’t be left around kids because of their short temper and hair-tendency to snap. If you treat them with kindness and are patient with them, they’ll also try to keep their temper in check and cooperate, BUT they tend to make it known who’s boss, and I’ll have you know that it’s not you!

Caring For Chiwoxys

Early training and socialization are something you don’t want to take lightly if you want a Chow Pei as a family dog. Also, make sure to teach your kids to behave around your dog and not poke or trigger it because you can never be sure of this interesting breed’s temper. Better to be safe than to be sorry, right?

The Chiwoxys are a pretty active dog breed and have a fast metabolism, requiring at least 45-60 minutes of exercise regularly. Grooming, bathing, good nutrition are all necessary for their proper care.

Chiwoxy Nutrition

A dog’s stomach is not exactly designed to ferment and digest carbohydrates properly; therefore, giving them starchy foods is not the best option. Your dog will see, look, and feel better if it’s on a fresh diet.

The Chiwoxys are muscular dogs if they eat well and exercise enough, so their main nutrient requirement is protein. Thus, make sure to include lamb, beef, and chicken in their diet. In addition, it would be best if you fed your dog at least one and a half cups of good quality dog food regularly.

How to Groom a Chiwoxy?

The Chiwoxy has a wiry and corded coat; therefore, it requires brushing at least 4-5 times a week and hand-stripping once in six months.  It prevents your dog from excessive shedding and keeps the coat healthy and shiny.

Your dog’s teeth should be brushed at least 2-3 times a week, and the ears should also be regularly checked to make sure there’s no wax or signs of infection there. Also, make sure to have your Chiwoxy’s nails clipped twice a week.

Chiwoxy Activity Levels

The Chiwoxys are pretty active and enjoy play-time and running. Taking them out for daily walks, playing fetch with them in the yard, visits to the dog park are great activities to keep your dog healthy, happy, and well-exercised.

Chiwoxy Care

It is essential to keep your dog physically and mentally challenged as that is essential for good health. Make sure to provide your dog with all vital nutrients and also ensure that they get enough exercise daily. And the most important thing you need to do is give them lots and lots of love and care.

Chiwoxy Health

The Chiwoxy is a pretty healthy dog. However, some health concerns include Patellar Luxation, Hypoglycemia, Color Dilution Alopecia, and Fallot’s Tetralogy.
