The Chow Shepherd, also known as “Sheprachow,” is a breed that results from a cross between the German Shepherd and the Chow Chow. They are super cute – and that’s putting it mildly! Chow shepherds are protective, playful, loyal, and aloof, too!

These qualities make them excellent family dogs that will alert you in case of any unusual activity and be fun and friendly around children and other pets.

The Sheprachow’s coat is always thick and dense but may vary between medium and medium-long. They are sturdily built and are heavy shedders. Thus, they will require a more experienced and firm hand when it comes to grooming these balls of fluff. Like, mom and dad, their eyes are brown. However, the tail may be extended and sweep just a bit like a German shepherd, or it may curve more like the Chow chow.

Chow Shepherd History

Chow Shepherd Dog Breed Information – All You Need To KnowThe Chow Shepherd is a hybrid dog and not very widely known, mainly because it is a modern breed. So, let’s take a look at the parents’ history to know more about them, shall we?

The German Shepherd were once known as the “German Sheepdog” as they were popular in the 1800s in herding and protecting sheep flocks. Now they’ve proven themselves to be excellent therapy, service, and police dogs! Who would’ve thought?

The Chow Chow is one of the 14 original canine breeds and is considered to be among the world’s most ancient dogs. They were excellent at herding and guarding and were part of the royal courts of Europe and gradually made their way into North America, where they were not only protectors but also trusted companions.

Chow Shepherd Characteristics

As aforementioned, the Sheprachow is sturdy and can be pretty fluffy sometimes. It has the dominant genes of the Chow Chow in the coat and body. Now that’s a bundle of joy and happiness right there!

The face is commonly more sleek than round. The colors may vary between fawn, red, black, brown, cream, and gray. Coat density also varies between sparse, standard, and thick.  In addition to that, coat texture may be corded, straight, wavy, and curly.

How Big Do Chow Shepherds Get

The average Sheprachow grows to be about 22-26 inches, weighing as much as 45-90 pounds, both male and female.

Chow Shepherd Life Expectancy

They can live up to 10-12 years. Major health concerns for Chow Shepherds include cataracts, hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and myasthenia gravis. So, regular check-ups and visits to the veterinary doctor are necessary. The issues can also be minimized by responsible breeding and proper health care.

How much does a Chow Shepherd Cost?

Like all other dogs, the prices of Chow Shepherd dogs depend on multiple factors. Generally, the cost of an average new Sheprachow puppy is around $250-$750, and annual medical expenses (like flea prevention, vaccinations, insurance, etc.) can go as much as $600. Other non-medical expenses (like long hair grooming, food, toys, training, and toys) can be around $1000 per year.

Chow Shepherd Temperament

The German Shepherd is a loyal, intelligent, wary of strangers, and protective breed of dogs. They don’t like being left alone for an extended period and require lots of mental and physical stimulation.

The Chow Chow’s temperament is often compared with that of a cat, that is, clever, reserved, independent, and also very stubborn! However, these adorable fluffies are not aggressive at all. They require socialization to be happy with children and other pets.

The Chow Shepherd, as we can guess by now, has all of these characteristics. Yayyy! They are agile and full of energy and can become bored easily if not mentally challenged on a regular basis. They are quite stubborn; therefore, they can be a real handful when it comes to training them. Apart from this, they have a loving personality and are ideal for guarding property. They love to be challenged, so this makes them a great companion for people who like to try new things and are open to new adventures.

Activity Requirements of Chow Shepherds

Since Chow Shepherds are energetic and powerful, they require households consisting of members that are up for more activities and keeping their dogs busy. They are not the type of canines who would be fine in an apartment. Fresh air is essential for their well-being. They make good walking or jogging partners, keeping in mind their athletic nature. Walking 10 miles is no big deal for these tough dogs!

Another thing you should know about Sheprachows is that you should wait until you’re in a safe area with them because they like to chase things if off the leash. You can never be sure, so it’s best to stay safe. Take them to dog parks or walks on hills if convenient. It may take a while before they get tired, so make sure they are mentally and physically challenged on a daily basis.

Maintenance of Chow Shepherds

Sheprachows are heavy shedders, especially in the shedding season. Duh! Thus, brushing and grooming at least thrice a week is essential.  Like us humans, dogs’ dental health is vital as well. So make sure to brush their teeth 3 to 4 times a week using dog toothpaste.

Their nails, however, are not like ours. If the dogs don’t wear their nails down when out, clipping them becomes essential. It is noteworthy that they have blood vessels and nerves in the lower section, and bleeding can occur if these are not avoided when clipping, so you should let a professional groomer take care of that if you ever get unsure.

Their ears should also be taken care of and wiped at least once a week. It can get messy in there if not cleaned regularly. Don’t we all know the feeling?

Early training and socialization are something that should not be skipped or taken lightly. This is because some Chow Shepherds are not friendly by birth and can be dangerous around children and other small pets unless they grew up with them.
