The Clumber Pei, or as we like to call it, Mr. Pei-Pei, is a friendly and mild-mannered breed. It loves its family with all of the love that its small little heart can muster up. The breed is interestingly cross between two very diverse parents.

Don’t worry; it only adds to the beauty of this breed, as you will learn shortly.

Clumber Pei History

Clumber Pei Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowThe Clumber Pei is a hybrid breed with two diverse breeds as its parents. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information available on the development of this breed. The widely accepted notion is that it came about in the 1990s. The first parent of this breed is the Clumber Spaniel. This breed is thought to be a cross between the Basset Hound and the Alpine Spaniel, both of which are remarkable breeds on their own. The breed was conceived around the 1800s around Clumber Park. It was primarily a retrieving breed, thanks to its amazing scenting capabilities.

The Shar-Pei is the second parent. This breed is an ancient breed and is thought to have originated in China. It is thought to have either the Chow Chow or the Thai Ridgeback as its parents. The earliest history of this breed can be dated back to as early as 200 B.C. The breed was saved from imminent extinction due to the violence of the revolution in China. Primarily it was used and employed as a guardian watchdog. The breed was registered with the AKC in 1992.

Clumber Pei Characteristics

The clumber Pei is a strong and attractive breed evident from its physical appearance. The breed will normally have a short and dense coat, which clings closely to its body. The colors of the coat will vary between almost uncountable figures. Generally, the colors are brown, red-black, white, apricot, brindle, and so on. The body of the Clumber Pei is built to withstand with its strong bones and legs. It has that unique Shar-Pei look around its muzzle.

How Big do Clumber Pei Get

If you breed two medium-sized parents, you’ll get medium-sized offspring. Thus, the Clumber Pei’s height range is 18 to 20 inches for males and 17 to 19 inches for females. On the other hand, the weight ranges are 55 to 70 lbs and 50 to 65 lbs for males and females, respectively.

How Long Does Clumber Pei Live

Both parent breeds normally have a long lifespan; consequently, they will live at least to the ripe age of 12 years. The upper limit is held at 15 years normally.

How Much Does a Clumber Pei Cost

The Clumber Pei is a rare and unknown breed because it has been introduced quite recently. Thus the price is reduced. You should be able to get a healthy puppy for a price of more than 500 dollars. There isn’t much statistical data to back this up, and the area you live in will greatly determine the price.

Clumber Pei Temperament/Personality

The Clumber Pei harbors most of the characteristics of the Shar-Pei. It will have the Clumber Spaniel’s lovable cuddliness, but its overall nature will resemble the Shar-Pei more. It will never try to anger you intentionally, that is. The unintentional part comes in due to its over-the-top intelligence, which makes it quite independent. This independence does not diminish its love, but it does make it less likely to listen. It will respond positively to reward-based systems, so that should take care of that.

You will have to socialize it from an early age to eradicate any chances of it being aggressive to other breeds or humans. Why? Because this breed does not respond very warmly to strangers from the get-go. Early socialization and cautious introductions without any jerky motions will be enough to keep this breed open to newer interactions. It’s perfect for every type of family, though supervision around children is recommended.

Caring for Clumber Pei

Anything not cared for eventually wither out and become a husk of its past self. To save the Clumber Pei from that unfortunate future, we have compiled a list of things that you may want to have a look at.

Clumber Pei Nutrition

A medium-sized breed with strong muscles needs a moderate dietary routine. Preferably give it at least three cups of nutritious food every day. Do not overfeed it, and if you do, then amp up the activities.

How to Groom a Clumber Pei

Okay, so there’s bad news for people with allergies. You will have to stay away from the irresistible Pei-Pei so that your allergies aren’t triggered. For the people who plan on getting this breed, daily brushing sessions are a necessity. Yes, we know it may become a bit hectic, but if you don’t want hair in every corner of the house, you’ll have to follow the guidelines. Bathing it should be an excessive activity. More than required, bathing will actually harm its skin more. Trim its nails whenever you hear that distinct click sound. Brush its teeth and keep its ears clean and dry. That’s the long and the short of it.

Clumber Pei Activity Levels

The Clumber Pei is moderately active, though it does love activities that include you. Fetch, tag, and walks are its primary source of enjoyment. To keep it healthy, we would recommend a daily dose of exercise with a duration of at least 45 minutes.

Caring for Clumber Pei

The Clumber Pei is, first of all, a breed not meant for people with allergies. Secondly, if you despise daily grooming sessions, then again, it’s not for you. Training it is easy if you know how to get the right responses from it. Socialization for the Clumber Pei is a necessity because it usually stays closed to interactions with strangers. Based on its training and socialization needs, we can only say that first-timers may have some problems taking care of this breed.

Clumber Pei Health

Hybrid breeds are by their nature highly susceptible to some very dangerous conditions. The reason for that is the rite of inheritance. The Clumber Pei, as such, is vulnerable to some dangerous conditions too. These include Skeletal/Joint Conditions, Eye Conditions, and the all too usual conditions like Entropion, Patellar Luxation, Hip/Elbow Dysplasia, and Ectropion.

To keep your buddy safe from all of these, we would recommend at least weekly trips to the vet’s office. This will make sure that diagnosis is carried out without delays. Watch out for any unhealthy elements in its diet, and everything should work out perfectly.
