Cock-A-Chon History

Cock A Chon Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowThe Cock-A-Chon is a hybrid breed, and like all hybrid breeds, to understand its history, we must analyze the history of its parents. The first parent of the Cock-A-Chon is the Bichon Frise; an elegant breed thought to have the equally elegant Italian Water Spaniel as its parent.

This ancestor remains consistent as an ancestor to both the Maltese and the Poodle. The Cock-A-Chon became acknowledged for their showmanship and quickly were associated with royalty. The AKC accepted the Cock-A-Chon in 1972.

The second parent is the Cocker Spaniel. This breed can be traced back to the original hunter dogs named the Spaniels. The land versions of these spaniels were subdivided based on size into the Cocker or the Springer spaniel.

The primary purpose of the Cocker Spaniel was to flush out the game. Their size made them experts at quickly dragging out the game. The breed quickly gained recognition and was then developed further based on the tameness into the American Cocker Spaniel.

Cock-A-Chon Characteristics

The Cock-A-Chon is small and adorable. It has small almond-shaped eyes with a lively and lovable glint. The ears of this breed are floppy and drop to the sides of its head. Despite their small size, their body is very balanced, and their style of carrying themselves around is enough to prove that. Finally, its coat is double-layered usually and is a combination of both parent breed’s coats. Overall the coat will consistently be soft.

How Big do Cock-A-Chon Get

Smallness in size is what defines the Cock-A-Chon. It has a height range of 11 to 16 inches for both males and females. The weight range for this breed is 12 to 24 lbs for both genders.

How Long Does Cock-A-Chon Live

The Cock-A-Chon is a strong breed with two long-living and blessed parents. The average inherited lifespan is between 12 and 14 years. The value can be increased with proper diet and the sweet dosage of love.

How Much Does a Cock-A-Chon Cost

The price of the Cock-A-Chon can vary considerably based on the area that you are living in and the health as in deworming status etc., for the puppy. Generally, a healthy puppy can cost you anything between 400 and 800 dollars.

Cock-A-Chon Temperament/Personality

Never has there been a report of a Cock-A-Chon ever harming anyone, human or animal. The breed is one of the friendliest breeds around. It gets along perfectly with both humans and pets. It craves attention and wants to please its humans as much as it can. This means that you can expect it to behave enough to stay on your good side all the time. If you have children, you won’t have to worry about being harmed because of this boy/girl.

Since it’s a people pleaser, it naturally strives to listen to every command given. In short, training it is almost too easy. Even if it does show a slight reluctance, positive reinforcement should get rid of that. If it still doesn’t, then a few Dog training treats should cover the extra mile for you. How to Groom a Cock-A-Chon

The Cock-A-Chon may be a slightly tricky breed to groom, mainly because of its coat. To keep its coat from matting and tangling, we recommend using a specialized Dog Brush. The ideal amount of brushing sessions would be every day. Brushing its coat every day will also distribute the oils produced by its skin. Bathe it with a Dog Shampoo every month or other month. Trim its nails every three weeks, and brush its teeth with a dedicated Toothpaste for Dogs. Finally, the most important and underrated part is cleaning its ears, which tend to accumulate a lot of dirt.

Cock-A-Chon Activity Levels

The Cock-A-Chon is a healthy, active boy, but it won’t whine about not exercising. Yet, it doesn’t mean that you overlook the exercise that it needs. At least 50 minutes of exercise every day is a necessity for this breed. You can take it to the local park, though to keep it from running around, you should use a Dog Collar. If you have large indoor spaces, then even that may be enough to tire it out.

Caring for Cock-A-Chon

The Cock-A-Chon is by far one of the most manageable breeds. Its grooming needs may become a bit overwhelming for some people, but others might view it as quality time. Training it is as easy as it gets because the Cock-A-Chon is a good boy/girl and will listen to whatever you have to say. Socializing it is another easy-to-manage concept. This breed is so easy to manage that even a first-timer won’t have much problem.

Cock-A-Chon Health

Small size and hybrid status are like a breeding ground for susceptibilities to certain diseases. In the case of the Cock-A-Chon, these susceptibilities are Hemophilia, Urolithiasis, Eye Problems, Platelet Dysfunction, Heart Problems, Epilepsy, and Skin Problems. There are some grave conditions mixed in there. Thus to keep it healthy, the best thing to do is to keep in touch with your local vet.

Take your good doggie to the local vet every week; give it thorough tests, including X-rays, Blood counts, etc. This will reduce the delays in diagnosis and give your boy a better chance of fighting dangerous diseases. That’s pretty much it.
