Earthborn Holistic describes their dog food as “whole food nutrition born from the earth”. The brand is owned by Midwestern Pet Food Inc, an Indiana-based and family owned pet food manufacturer. Midwestern Pet Food Inc also owns the pet food brands Sportmix and Propac. The brand’s core values are caring for your pet and caring for the environment. In addition to high-quality and carefully-formulated recipes, they use partially plant-based plastic packaging and promote recycling and tree-planting through various partner programs.
Types of Earthborn Holistic Dog Food
Earthborn Holistic has an extensive and varied range of wet and dry dog food as well as a similarly extensive line of cat foods. Their dog foods are organized into five lines: Grain-Free Holistic Formulas, Venture Formulas, Holistic Formulas, K95 and Moist Grain Free. They also offer a few types of specialty dog treats.
The Grain-Free range contains many of Earthborn Holistic’s most popular recipes. The line includes eight different types including a variety of flavors and specialized formulas. Primitive Natural, Coastal Catch, Meadow Feast, and Great Plains Feast make up their grain-free flavor options for adult dogs. They also offer specific large-breed and small-breed formulas, as well as specialized grain-free recipes for puppies and for weight loss. The Venture range is defined by unusual ingredient choices and a limited ingredient list, many which admit ingredients such as peas and legumes that some dogs can be intolerant to. Ingredients include unique proteins like pollock, squid and rabbit as well as chickpeas, pumpkin and squash.
The Holistic range comprised of a small number of recipes containing grains. While their grain-free range is certainly the brand’s most extensive, formulas containing grains are a valuable addition to cater to dogs with different preferences and intolerances. Currently, the line has two varieties: Adult Vantage and Ocean Fusion.

Ingredients
On Earthborn Holistic’s website, the brand describes the limited ingredients in their products as being “everything you want, nothing you don’t”. Earthborn Holistic’s products are manufactured in the US, but ingredients are sourced from all over the globe. Their production is outsourced to a number of factories in Illinois, Oklahoma and New York.
Nutrition content varies significantly between their dry dog food and wet food lines but are generally satisfactory in their proportions. On average, 39 percent of calories are from carbohydrates, 29 percent are from protein and 32 percent are from fats. The percentage of carbohydrates is relatively high compared to a dog’s natural diet. The estimated fiber content is 4.4 percent, which is in line with the recommended for dog foods.
Reading the ingredient list for their dog foods, it is easy to tell that each of their recipes are made up of primarily natural, whole foods. However, there are a couple of ingredients in their mixes that are sometimes considered “controversial”. Tomato pomace, which is found in Earthborn Holistic’s recipes, is sometimes looked at as a cheap dog food filler. While inexpensive, it does contribute a high nutrient content and fiber to dog food. The high percentages of peas (denoted as peas, pea protein pea starch and pea fiber) and legumes such as chickpeas is also undesirable to some, as it has a lower protein content than meat, and can be viewed as a way to skimp the percentage of pricier meat in their recipe. Canola oil is also an ingredient that is viewed as controversial, as it is derived from genetically modified rapeseed.
Additionally, there are a couple of high-quality ingredients that point towards Earthborn Holistic being a better dog food brand. Chelated minerals, typically found in higher-quality dog food as they are attached to protein and easier to absorb, are included in their formulas. Dried fermentation products are also added, which are considered a high-quality ingredient and act as probiotics to support regular digestion and gut health.

This is certainly more expensive than your average grocery store kibble, but keep in mind that your dollar will be going towards specialty ingredients and supplements not present in mainstream brands.
