Ingredients

All of Health’s Extension’s recipes are meant to mimic a dog’s ancestral canine diet. The primary ingredient in all of their recipes is whole meats including poultry, fish and lamb. Carbohydrates are derived from brown rice and oatmeal among other ingredients. They also include a variety of holistic superfoods including ginger and ginkgo bilboa, which function to boost the immune system, encourage healthy joint development and improve the health of the coat and skin. They also include a variety of other natural supplements including probiotics and a blend of omega fatty acids. Health Extension also adds dried fermentation products to aid with digestion and chelated minerals which aid in digestion and mineral absorption.

Health Extension’s dog food products do not contain any cheap filler ingredients, by-products, artificial colors and flavors. They also do not contain any soy or corn products. However, they do contain a couple of ingredients that are sometimes considered to be “controversial.” Brewer’s yeast, which is a byproduct of the beer making process, is an allergen for many dogs. If your dog is not allergic, however, it contributes a high mineral and nutrient value. Beet pulp, which is a byproduct of extracting sugar from beets. However, beet pulp is thought to contribute to intestinal health and balance blood sugar levels, which is why it is included in so many dog food recipes, even high-end brands.

On average, 40 percent of calories in their formulas are from fats, 38 percent are from carbohydrates and 22 percent are from protein. It is important to keep in mind that the added cost goes towards higher-quality ingredients that you should expect to pay more for. Their dry dog food comes in lots of different sizes, which is convenient for testing different products and flavors. A 30-pound bag of their dry classic recipes is priced at around $55 with their grain-free recipes are around the same price for a smaller 23.5-pound bag. Their wet food is sold in large and small sizes. Their large 13.5-ounce cans are sold in cases of 12 for around $30, which comes out to $2.50 per can.

Health Extension’s price range and recipe is similar to more widely available natural dog food brands such as Taste of the Wild and Diamond.
