The Magyar Agar is a tough, active, vigilant, and alert dog that also goes by the name Hungarian Greyhound because it comes from Hungary and has the appearance and stamina of the Greyhound. However, these dogs are not direct descendants of the Greyhounds, but are intelligent and hardworking like them.
It is a smart, well-mannered, playful, and loyal dog that loves to play and run around and explore. It is highly active and requires a notable amount of exercise daily; otherwise, it can become frustrated and quite a nuisance. It was initially bred to be a coursing and hunting dog, but lately, it’s a companion dog mainly.
Magyar Agar History
The Magyar Agars are thought to have been over eleven hundred years old, but no solid proof is available to back this up. However, written records were found in the 1800s. A theory exists that says that these dogs traveled with Magyars, a migratory tribe in Hungary, and lived in the Ural Mountains of Eurasia.
Archaeologists have found evidence of these dogs in the Carpathian Mountain Range. The Magyar Agars came over a thousand years ago and were substantially used in Hajdu-Bihar and Somogy. It is noteworthy that the word “agar” means “gaze hound” or “wind hound,” and “Magyar” means “Hungary” in the Hungarian language. So basically, the name means Hungarian Gaze/Wind Hound!
Magyar Agar Characteristics
The Magyar Agar has a strong, independent, graceful, and elegant nature. It is playful yet decent and has plenty of stamina that it uses to accompany its humans in different activities. It is also quite friendly with children but needs to be supervised when around small pets. It has an alert and dignified look, with tall and erect ears. Its coat is short, rough and coarse, and comes in many colors: blue, brown, gray, black, and tan.

An average adult male Magyar Agar is about 25-27 inches tall and weighs somewhere between 49-68 pounds. On the other hand, the female is around 24-26 inches tall and weighs the same as the male. At six months old, these dogs are 18.5-19.5 inches tall and weigh 25 pounds. When they turn one year old, their height increases up to 22-23 inches, and their weight becomes 46.5 pounds.
