Munchkin Cat Breed InfoThe Munchkin is a medium-sized cat breed with a modest body and thick-coated fur. There comes various colors and patterns of this breed’s fur. The Munchkin cat is mainly known for its short legs, caused due to genetic mutation. The Munchkin, in general, is a social, calm, playful, and curious cat breed.

Munchkin History

This cute little fellow came into existence in 1944 in Great Britain. Later on, the short-legged cats were often spotted in Russia. In 1983, in Rayville, this short-legged breed got famous. Its cuteness started to spread worldwide, and the breed was named the Munchkin. Many people were worried about its mutated legs and wondered if the breed would become extinct.

Initially, the Munchkin cat breed didn’t get recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association. However, the International Cat Association recognized the breed and categorized it under dwarf cats. However, the production of the Munchkin cat breed is still under controversy and is considered banned in some states due to its mutated genes.

Munchkin Key Facts

In 1991, many cat fancier professionals foretold that this breed wouldn’t survive for a longer duration due to its short legs. Fortunately, the Munchkin cat managed to survive till now. The discovery of the Munchkin breed is accidental as a school teacher found two short-legged cats mating under her car. Since then, it has been said that the roots of this breed are due to those two cats.

In Russia, the Munchkin cat was known as Stalingrad Kangaroo Cat as these kittens constantly sat on their haunches. One of the shocking facts about this breed is that not all the Munchkin cats are similar. There are three main types of Munchkin cats based on their leg length: the standard, super-short, and rug-hugger.

How Big Do Munchkin Get?

The Munchkin is a medium-sized cat and weighs about six to nine pounds; and their height ranges from five to seven inches. This breed is a dependent cat breed and requires lots of care. Feeding the right kind of cat food at the right times will help your Munchkin cat grow speedily and stay healthy throughout its lifespan.

Munchkin Lifespan

The average life span of the Munchkin cats is about twelve to fifteen years. These cats were always considered delicate ones with a higher mortality rate. But, the tough genes of the Munchkin cats help them survive well. However, these cats are strictly indoor cats.

As the Munchkin cat has a thick coat, regular grooming is required, so the cot remains shiny and tangle-free. Occasional bathing using cat shampoo would be a good idea to keep your kitty clean and spotless. Nails should be properly trimmed. Ear and eye cleaning are vital to avoid infections.

As this breed is intelligent, strict training will not be required. Positive reinforcement will help you get better results. Using cat treats to train your Munchkin kitten will be a better idea. Litter training should be given as early as possible.

The Munchkin cats are energetic and fun-loving cats. Although these cats don’t require outdoor activities, a larger living space inside the house is demanded. The Munchkin cats are active and love to run and play around.

Due to its mutated legs, other posture issues such as spinal problems and chest deformity can be seen in this breed. This is due to muscles or bone growth in an incorrect manner. Osteoarthritis is also prevalent in this breed.
