The Sapsali, also known as the Sapsaree, is a Korean dog. According to records, the breed has been around since 400 B.C. That honestly blew our minds. Visually the Sapsali looks more like a St. Bernard than the St. Bernard itself.

Nevertheless, this beautiful dog is a sweetheart, all cuddly and fuzzy, just like its coat. But, unfortunately, even this cute canine had to go through a tragedy. More details about this doggie have been given below.

Sapsali History

Sapsali Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowThe Sapsali is an ancient dog from Korea. This beautiful dog was a sign of nobility and refinement in Korean society. It wasn’t a monopolized dog, however. Everyone loved it, from the normal people to the higher society. However, the War didn’t spare this dog. During the First World War, the Japanese army sacrificed about one hundred thousand of these doggies to create coats for their soldiers.

After the War, and the stability that lasted a few short years, their numbers decreased even more. Finally, a few devoted breeders and intellectuals realized the threat that this dog was faced with. They gathered these doggies and started recreating the dog. Ha Ji-Hong was the person most devoted to this cause. With his financial and intellectual backing, the breed began to regain a foothold. It is still considered a rare breed since only three to four thousand of these dogs are known to exist.

Sapsali Characteristics

The Sapsali has a fixed standard, supervised by the Korean club and association for this canine. The Sapsali will be medium-sized at best, with it being slightly rectangular in appearance. The Sapsali will have a deep chest and strong front paws. However, you probably won’t spot all those muscles since the coat obscures them. The color variations for this canine are Black, Brown, Red, Gray, and Isabella.

How Big do Sapsali Get

The Sapsali may look all heavy and big, but in the end, it’s all just hair. Underneath that hair lay lean muscles and strong skin. The males and females, in general, have the same height and weight range. And what are those ranges? The height range is 19 to 23 inches, while the weight range is 35 to 60 lbs.

How Long Does Sapsali Live

The Sapsali has a pure lineage. However, due to its unfortunate demise and inbreeding in the 1980s, its lifespan has become shorter. Currently, the Sapsali normally live between 11 and 13 years of age. Compared to other purebred dogs, this lifespan is short. However, it should be noted that age is just a number, and this doggie has often defied odds (Case in point, its imminent extinction).

How Much Does a Sapsali Cost

We all know how rare the Sapsali is and how it’s making a recovery. Knowing all of this and then putting a price on this doggie isn’t a wise choice. You could try to get the Sapsali, but you would most likely need a lot of connections. Some people have placed the price of this doggie between 350 and 700 dollars, which doesn’t seem all that plausible.

Sapsali Temperament/Personality

The Sapsali is a companion dog; what more proof do you want of its apparent friendliness. There is nothing, and we say NOTHING, that can break the bonds it forms with its humans. Loyalty would be its middle name if it were from Rome and walked upright. Normally the Sapsali should also get along with other dogs. However, it may have some problems if it isn’t socialized properly.

When it comes to training, the Sapsali won’t have any problems listening to commands. It may experience an occasional stroke of stubbornness, but overall, it shouldn’t be that concerning. Some Dog Training Treats should be enough to quell that desire to rebel.

Caring for Sapsali

What does a rare dog like the Sapsali need? It needs pretty much what every other doggie need. So what does every other doggie need? The answer to this question is in the section and categorically divided paragraphs below.

Sapsali Nutrition

The Sapsali won’t need more than three cups of food. But, if you give it more than three cups of food, be ready for some weight gain. The main way to lose excess weight is to either give it increasingly intensive exercise sessions. Another way is to give it normal exercise sessions with a combination of Dog Food for Weight-Loss.

How to Groom a Sapsali

The shaggy coat of the Sapsali can be a bit problematic to manage. Matting can also be quite prominent with its coat. Typically, the coat of the Sapsali needs to be brushed every day. In addition, you have to bathe the Sapsali about once per month. You will have to use a Dog Shampoo or a Puppy Shampoo based its age. You should also keep its dental hygiene in check. You also have to keep its ears and nails in check.

Sapsali Activity Levels

The Sapsali is a moderately active dog. It needs about 40 to 50 minutes of daily activity. Anyone can manage and devote that much time per day. If you have any problems due to your working hours, then put your doggie in a daycare. It will be better than keeping it locked inside of the house.

Caring for Sapsali

What does every dog need? Love, attention, food, and some good toys. More than anything, your doggie needs someplace to sleep in. You have two options. Either get a Dog House if you have a yard. Or you can get an Indestructible Dog Bed if you plan on keeping it inside of the house. No matter what choice you make, please understand that your canine companion needs a good place to sleep in.

Another equally important thing that most owners overlook is the Sapsali’s need for interaction. If you keep the Sapsali confined to your house, it will grow self-destructive. Without interactions, the Sapsali will also become prone to separation anxiety.

Sapsali Health

There are a few concerns when it comes to the health of your doggie. Many Sapsali puppies have CHD, which impairs their mobility. Another prominent condition is Patellar Luxation. Again, these aren’t the only conditions that could afflict your happy canine like a curse. But these are the most prominent ones. Other conditions range from Skin Conditions to Eye Conditions and Ear Infections.

Most skin, eyes, and ears infections can be distinguished and identified with the naked eye. However, more intricate and technical conditions like Congenital Heart Defect are impossible to spot physically. Therefore, you will need a detailed analysis of its body with the help of different tests. In short, please do not undermine the role of your vet when making choices for your doggie. Take it for a check-up at least once per month.
