Sarplaninac History

Sarplaninac Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowThe Sarplaninac is a dog from Yugoslavia. Like most giant dogs, this fearless canine is descended from the Molosser dogs. These canines were employed by the early Romans and Greek as protection and sometimes War-Dogs. The Sarplaninac remained unknown and untouched for centuries in their nativity. They remained that way till the beginning of the 19th Century. These dogs began to be recognized by then.

Officially these dogs were used only for hunting, guarding, and flocking purposes. Technically it was all that the farmers and landowners of the locality needed. By 1939 this dog had been recognized by the FCI by the title of the Illyrian Shepherd. By 1957 they were renamed the Yugoslavian Shepherd dog. By the end of the 19th Century, this dog had also been employed as a guard dog. The UKC accepted the Sarplaninac in 1995.

Sarplaninac Characteristics

Like we have stated numerous times before, the Sarplaninac is a giant dog. It will have a lot of muscles underneath its thick skin. Normally it looks like a giant wolf. It will have sharp, pointed ears and medium-sized eyes. The coat should be thick and insulated. The legs of the Sarplaninac are long, and the front paws are usually large and strong. Colors for the coat are quite static and somber, with Gray, Sable, Brown, and slight variations of Cream and Fawn.

How Big do Sarplaninac Get

The Sarplaninac is a medium to a large-sized dog with moderate muscle density. The height range for males is 24 to 26 inches, while females have a height range of 22 to 24 inches. The weight range of the males is naturally a bit more than the females. The males usually weigh between 77 and 99 lbs, while the females are 66 to 88 lbs heavy.

How Long Does Sarplaninac Live

Any conditions in no way restrict the lifespan of the Sarplaninac. The average lifespan of the Sarplaninac will be close to 12 or 14 years. The maximum documented lifespan for this canine is 15 years, though it may grow even older if you pay attention to its health. How can you do that? The answer to this question lies in its respective “Health” section.

How Much Does a Sarplaninac Cost

Pure breed canines are usually more expensive than mixed canines. Since the Sarplaninac is a developed and standardized canine, its price should stay above the 1400-dollar mark. According to our insight and experience, you can acquire a healthy Sarplaninac puppy for the price of 2000 or 2200 dollars. The price of the Sarplaninac is highly dependent on the health of your doggie.

Sarplaninac Temperament/Personality

There shouldn’t be much of a problem in the Sarplaninac’s attitude, other than the apparent bloodlust for small pets. But, other than small pets, like Gerbils and Hamsters, the Sarplaninac should be able to befriend almost every other animal (Those that can be kept as pets!). An important thing to note about this canine is its tendency to grow restless when it doesn’t have work. More details about this have been given in the caring section.

We would also like to state that the Sarplaninac isn’t a dog for inexperienced people. If you don’t have prior experience, then you’ll have a hard time managing it. Forget about training it; you will even have a hard time house-breaking it. We would recommend experienced owners to take charge of this canine.

Caring for Sarplaninac

The following section will enable you to make the right decisions for your doggie. How will it help you make the right decisions? By helping you in understanding the needs of your canine and figuring out a game plan.

Sarplaninac Nutrition

The Sarplaninac needs between two to three cups of food. Ideally, the food should be tasty and healthy. If you want to make the food more desirable, then use some Dog Food Toppings. The right toppings can work wonders for your doggie’s appetite and health. You can also use some Bully Sticks for Dogs as dessert treats and to clean out your doggie’s teeth.

How to Groom a Sarplaninac

Like most dogs with long coats, the Sarplaninac needs a fair bit of effort to maintain its coat. Starting with the brushing sessions, you will have to brush its coat every day. Missing days could lead to hair around the house and some matting-knotting. You will also have to increase the frequency of the brushing sessions in warm weather. You won’t have to bathe it often since it doesn’t drool much. You might have to give it a Dog Breath Freshener because, boy, is their morning breath bad.

Sarplaninac Activity Levels

The Sarplaninac won’t need more than 60 to 70 minutes of exercise per day. However, we understand that devoting a chunk of your time to your doggie like that isn’t easy. Therefore, we would highly recommend getting a Dog Treadmill. It will allow you to wear out your doggie’s energy levels. However, it will still need a walk (Even if it’s a short one).

Caring for Sarplaninac

The first thing that you should know is the Sarplaninac’s inability to cope with the cold. If you keep it in warm regions, particularly in countries close to the equator, have a cooler of some sort. One good way to keep your doggie cool is to get some Dog Cooling Pads.

Another thing to know about your doggie is its need for a role in the house. You will have to give it some sort of role. It derives satisfaction from being useful and being in the eyes of its owner. Keeping it as a guard dog or any other smaller role should be good enough.

Sarplaninac Health

There aren’t a lot of medical concerns when it comes to the health of your doggie. However, one problem that a few people have reported concerning this dog is Patellar Luxation. It is essentially a condition in which a joint is out of place. As a result, it impairs mobility and leads to frustration. Most of the other conditions for this doggie are generally related to the Eyes and Ears and increase with age.

To dispose of these conditions, you will need the help of your vet. You will need to give it a general run-down of tests, including X-Rays. Ultimately, your vet will prescribe some medication or routines that you will have to follow. It isn’t that hard or troublesome.
