Savannah Cat Breed InfoA Savannah cat is a cross between the Siamese cat and the wild several.

This combination of wild and domestic breeds gives the Savannah a unique personality and distinct appearance;

It retains the wild looks of its wild ancestors in the form of long legs and pointed ears while having a calm, laid-back, and friendly personality of a domestic cat.

Savannah Cat History

The Savannah Cat is considered one of the largest domestic cats in the world today, along with the Maine Coon and the Siberian Cat.

As we have already mentioned, this cross between a domestic and wild cat is the reason behind the Savannahs’ distinct appearance.

And if you think about it, it is not likely that someone would think about doing this.

But as it turns out, people love this wild-looking cat.

The breed was particularly famous during the 1990s and was officially registered as a breed in 2001 by TICA, and later on, in 2012, the TICA recognized it as a champion breed.

Judee Frank is the person credited with the development of this breed.

Savannah Cat Key Facts

The Savannah Cat is intelligent, friendly, and loyal. This remarkable cat loves to follow its owner around the house, and this habit can be related to its loyalty.

The high intelligence of the Savanah is most evident in its ability to learn new tricks; these include playing fetch and walking on a leash.

Before you get a Savannah as a pet, you might want to check in with your local state law to confirm whether they allow ownership of domesticated Hybrids.

Most states in the US consider domesticated hybrid cats as tame.

Still, some states, including Hawaii, Texas, and Massachusetts, have more restrictive laws regarding the ownership of these types of cat breeds.

How does Big Do Savannah Cat get?

As we have mentioned earlier, the Savannah Cats are among the largest domesticated cats on the planet.

These large-sized cats are huge, even as kittens. The average adult Savannah Cat reaches a height of up to 16.5 inches and weighs between 8 – 23 pounds.

Their generation will determine the size of your Savannah Cat; those closer to their wild several parents will usually be larger.

Savannah Cat Lifespan

The Savannah Cats have one of the longest lifespans among large-sized cats.

They are a comparatively new breed without many breed-specific health issues. This lack of health issues translates into a healthy and long life.

According to breeders and our personal experience with this breed, it usually lives between 17 – 20 years.

How Much Does A Savannah Cat Cost?

The Savannah Cat has many generations, and the price of each generation of the Savannah Cat varies from the other.

The most exotic and new generation usually costs more than the older generation.

Generally, a typical savannah will cost you around $1,000 – $20,000, depending on the generation and filial rating.

In addition to the buying price, you may want to consider other expenses like accessories and medical bills.

Savannah Cat Personality

The Savannah Cat has a friendly and outgoing personality. Most cats of this breed hang out with other pets in a friendly and calm manner.

But this is only possible if they have been socialized from an early age.

Your Savannah Cat might not react calmly to other pets or people initially, as it has some wild genes in them.

But with exposure to more and more people and other pets, they become more social and relaxed.

The Savannah Cat is fearless. Unlike many other cats, they do not fear going in the water for a swim or bath.

Many Savannah owners have reported taking baths with their cats.

Caring For A Savannah Cat

The Savannah Cat is unique and distinct, so they require special care to live healthy and happy lives.

You have to consider their nutrition requirement, which is generally different from the nutrition requirement of most domesticated breeds.

The Savannah also has higher activity requirements, which, if not fulfilled, can lead to the development of health issues, both mental and physical.

So keep reading to find out all you need to about caring for a Savannah Cat.

Savannah Cat Nutrition

The Savannah Cat is an active cat that likes to keep itself busy with activity throughout the day.

This means that they spend a lot of energy jumping from place to place or exploring their environment. And to make up for this loss of energy, they require a lot of food.

The best way to determine the exact amount of food your cat requires is through its weight.

You can also visit your local vet to work out the optimal feeding plan for your cat.

It is generally a good idea to feed them a high protein diet, with foods such as True Nature Formula.

How To Groom A Savannah Cat?

The Savannah Cat has a short coat, which is why this breed is more popular than the long-haired breeds.

Ideally, you want to brush them with a metallic comb at least once per week to keep their coats healthy and remove loose hair.

The main grooming need for these big cats isn’t their short coats but it’s their perky ears.

Due to the large size of their ears, the Savannahs can develop certain ear-related problems.

It is best to check their ears regularly for any wax buildup or infection.

Savannah Cat Activity Levels

The Savannah Cat is one of the most active cat breeds out there; they require much attention and care.

If you are getting a Savannah Cat, you must prepare to devote at least one to two hours of your day to playing and interacting with your cat.

This breed is also very intelligent, so it is important to keep them busy, so they don’t become bored and start destroying things.

Savannah Cat Health Concerns

The Savannah Cat doesn’t have a lot of health issues that you need to worry about, except for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, a genetic disease also commonly found in the Bengal cat.
