Canines like the Shar Tzu are exceptionally rare because of their parents and their modern birth. These canines are hardly recognized in the modern world as separate dogs.

To an untrained eye, they will look similar to the Shih Tzu, but you see the Chinese Shar-Pei influence on closer inspection. There are more minute details, most of which have been explained below.

Shar Tzu History

Shar Tzu Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowDue to its recent birth, information on the Shar Tzu is limited. We don’t know why it was bred, but we know what it might have been bred for. One of its parents is the Shar-Pei, which was bred solely as a watch and companion dog. These tenacious canines would accompany Tibetan monks and warn them of impending dangers. After and during the establishment of the Republic, their numbers declined greatly, so much that foreign powers had to become involved to save them.

The Shih Tzu is another Chinese breed with an even richer and broader history. These canines have been around for more than fifteen hundred years. The Tang Dynasty is believed to have been a fan of this dog. These dogs were so important that they reflected a person’s class and nobility in ancient China. The only way to get a Shih Tzu was as a gift from the royalty by visiting them. By the parents’ personality, we believe that the Shar Tzu was bred to be a companion dog.

Shar Tzu Characteristics

The appearance of the Shar Tzu tends to vary based on genetic dominance. There are a few recurring features that can define the appearance of the Shar Tzu. The first is the length and consistency of its coat. The Shar Tzu should have a medium-length or short-length coat. The color of the coat varies between Brown, Fawn, Cream, Red and Sable. Their eyes are usually long and drooping, while their snout or muzzle may take after any side of the family.

How Big do Shar Tzu Get

The Shar Tzu is a small-sized canine to medium-sized at best. Again, the size reflects the parent that it takes after. The males are usually 12 to 18 inches tall and 25 to 40 lbs heavy. On the other hand, the females are 10 to 17 inches tall and 20 to 35 lbs heavy. The weight should be regulated through dietary control and exercise.

How Long Does Shar Tzu Live

There aren’t enough specimens of these canines available to define their lifespan. However, for the sake of standardization, we can say that they will live between 11 and 15 years of age if they are given the right care.

How Much Does a Shar Tzu Cost

The cost of the Shar Tzu will most likely remain between 600 and 900 dollars. We don’t know anything for certain about the price because there aren’t enough markets with this canine available. There are other costs related to the initial medical procedures and other miscellaneous procedures.

Shar Tzu Temperament/Personality

With both parents being companion dogs, you won’t have to worry about the Shar Tzu’s compatibility. Yes, we recommend a bit of caution when introducing them to other pets and children, but overall, they will do well with just about anyone. If you socialize with them from a young age, they will adapt to your lifestyle. After that, it’s all smooth sailing.

These canines are perceptive and intelligent. If you train them properly, they will learn very quickly. You can start training them from as early as the 8-week period. The initial few weeks will be frustrating, but you will have to stay positive.

Caring for Shar Tzu

As a first-time owner, there are a few mistakes that you might make. The following will section will help you by letting you skip that trial and error process.

Shar Tzu Nutrition

The Shar Tzu will need between two to three standard US cups of dog food per day when they reach full size. Their food needs to be controlled, and harmful elements must be expunged from their diets. Any gassy or hard-to-digest elements and things with dairy in them should be kept away from their food.

How to Groom a Shar Tzu

The Shar Tzu has effortless grooming sessions other than the consistent brushing. It needs to be brushed every day. We recommend using a good Dog Brush and a Dematter to remove matted or tangled bits. We also recommend using a Vacuum for Dog Hair to remove hair more effortlessly. The Shar Tzu’s hygiene consists of monthly baths and ear cleaning sessions. You will have to use a Dog Ear Cleaner for the ear cleaning because using buds or other means could damage their ears.

Shar Tzu Activity Levels

The Shar Tzu is a pretty active dog. They do well when inside the house, but they need to see the sky at least once per day. They will need at least an hour of activity to maintain their health. The best thing that you can do is take it for a walk in the morning and then another short one in the evening.

Caring for Shar Tzu

The Shar Tzu asks for nothing more than love and protection, but why shouldn’t you give it that extra comfort and protection when it is possible? What kind of protection and comfort do we refer to? Protection from the hot June sun and the cold winds of December. Keeping your dog inside the house is one way to protect it from nature’s wrath.

You should get some Dog Sweaters for the cold winters. You should get some Cooling Pads for Dogs for the scorching summer sun. A combination of these is recommended to help your canine brave the forces of nature.

Shar Tzu Health

The Shar Tzu is susceptible to CHD, Renal Dysplasia, different Skin Allergies, and Patellar Luxation, to name a few. These conditions are well-known for limiting your dog’s ability to grow and live. If you have a puppy, CHD and Breathing difficulties (Related to the Shar-Pei genes) can be devastating. The only way to save your canine from these conditions is through consistent check-ups. You should ask your vet for these check-ups once per month.

You should also spend more time with your doggie when it’s a puppy. They need attention and care, especially since they can bruise themselves easily. You also need to be careful about handling them.
