The Sheprador is a mix of the Australian Shepherd and the Labrador Retriever. All of us have heard about the Labrador Retriever at one point or another in our lives. You may not know much about the Australian Shepherd because it hasn’t had as much exposure as the Labrador.

Nevertheless, you should know that combining these two has created a beautiful and lovable Sheprador. The details about this canine have been discussed below.

Sheprador History

Sheprador Dog Breed Information All You Need To KnowThere are almost no documents about the birth of the Sheprador. The Australian Shepherd is a herding canine known for its affiliation with Australia. However, we would like to clarify that it has nothing to do with Australia. It was first bred in Spain, from where it spread to Australia through trade and immigrants. The Australian Shepherd has always been a reliable companion for farm owners and homeowners alike.

The Labrador Retriever is a well-known breed of dog. It is a descendant of the long dogs of St. John. Newfoundland is where this dog was born. There was a need for a tough dog that could swim well. They ended up with a massive fluff ball that could swim like a pro in the form of a Labrador. Their thick coats also protected them from the freezing temperatures of the freezing winter waters.

Sheprador Characteristics

The Sheprador can take after any side of the family based on gene dominance. It will usually have a dense, medium-length coat that is water-resistant. This water resistance is essentially a trait passed on from the Labrador Retriever. They will have thin and agile bodies, tempered to withstand a host of different conditions. The Sheprador will usually come in twelve to thirteen colors, including Brown, Fawn, Gray and Cream.

How Big do Sheprador Get

The Sheprador has two medium-sized canines as parents. Based on the lengths of its parents, we believe that the male Sheprador will remain between 23 and 26 inches. The female Sheprador will remain between 22 and 25 inches tall. The male Sheprador will remain between 50 to 80 lbs, while the females will remain between 40 to 70 lbs.

How Long Does Sheprador Live

The Sheprador, like most Labrador mixes, has an average lifespan. It will live between the ages of 10 and 12 years. The 12-year limit isn’t mandatory; your dog can live longer if it receives proper care and leads a healthy lifestyle. More information on this can be found in the Caring section.

How Much Does a Sheprador Cost

The cost of an average Sheprador will vary based on its looks. We know judging based on looks is wrong, but unfortunately, this is the cold, bitter truth of the dog world. However, most mixed breeds like the Sheprador will cost between 700 and 1300 dollars.

Sheprador Temperament/Personality

The Sheprador may turn out to be a bit deflective and aggressive if it isn’t socialized properly. Normally Labrador mixes are super friendly and affectionate. Having them around other pets isn’t a problem as long as they are socialized properly. We do not recommend keeping small pets unsupervised around this canine. You should start introducing them to different people and pets from a young age to get them used to diversity.

Training them will be easy if you know how to train them. It all boils down to whether you have experience or not. The more experience you have, the easier it will be to train. As long as you remain consistent and optimistic, training the Sheprador shouldn’t be a problem. If you find yourself at an impasse and things get too difficult, you can consult a professional dog trainer.

Caring for Sheprador

The following section addresses concerns like diet, exercise, health and grooming. All of these are related to the lifestyle of your canine, and it is your job to know everything about them.

Sheprador Nutrition

The Sheprador will need around two to three cups of food daily when it reaches maturity and the size mentioned in the section above. You have to keep the food as healthy as possible to avoid any health concerns from arising. Remember to keep the weight in check through the right diet.

How to Groom a Sheprador

The length of the Sheprador’s coat will necessitate grooming. Brushing its coat five to six times per week is usually a necessity. You can’t expect its coat to stay free without brushing. We recommend brushing it every day to stay on the safe side. You will have to trim its coat occasionally to make it more manageable. Bathe the Sheprador only when it needs a bath. To keep its skin nutrient-rich, you’ll need to use an appropriate Dog Shampoo.

Sheprador Activity Levels

Canines like the Sheprador, hardly sit still. They need a lot of physical activity to remain normal. If they have too much pent-up energy, they become self-destructive. You will have to give your Sheprador at least an hour of activity every day. We understand that you may not like this figure, but there are ways to reduce the time. You can use a Dog Treadmill to wear it down and then take it out for a short walk.

Caring for Sheprador

Fleas are the most common and dreadful condition that dogs suffer from. When a flea gets into your dog’s coat, it can wreak havoc. These fleas can infest your home and other pets. Fleas are a nuisance because of their tenacity and persistence. Even after a bath, a flea will not leave your dog. What is the solution to persistent fleas? The solution is straightforward: use a Flea Treatment for Dogs.

You should also get a Flea Collar. If you feel like going a step beyond that, we recommend using some Coconut Oil for Dogs. It will give the Sheprador’s coat a beautiful shine and a smooth texture.

Sheprador Healthy

Mixed breeds usually have poor immunity and a higher risk of contracting various diseases. The Sheprador also has an increased risk of inheriting different conditions. What this means for your canine is that it will have susceptibilities to a lot of different conditions. From what we have gathered, the Sheprador is particularly weak to conditions like Bloat, Entropion, Ectropion, Sebaceous Adenitis and Lens Luxation.

Some of these conditions can be spotted by the naked eye. The rest of the conditions and diseases are indiscernible. You will have to contact a verified person, essentially a vet. The vet will run some tests and tell you about your next move.
