Sphynx Cat Breed InfoThe Sphynx is one of the most distinct cat breeds in the world. You might have encountered it a lot, especially with cat lovers allergic to cat hair. The Sphynx is a hairless breed of cat developed in 1960. Hairlessness in cats results from a gene mutation, and this gene mutation is prevalent in all Sphynx cats.

Sphynx History

The Sphynx is one of the most famous hairless cats developed in 1960. There are other hairless cats, but they are relatively less popular, for example, Peterbald and the Donskoy. The current Sphynx breed was based on two different hairless cat breeds in North America. These breeds laid down the foundation on which today’s Sphynx stand tall.

Ridaydg Bawa was the person responsible for developing the Sphynx. He was a science graduate from the UOT. Riyadh worked along with his mother (a top breeder of the Siamese cat at that time) and developed the Sphynx. The exact reason why he wanted to develop a hairless cat is not known.

Sphynx Key Facts

Most people do not know this, but the Sphinx is one of the strongest and hardy cat breeds. These cats are built like they were supposed to fact the worst situations in the jungle (although they may not appear so due to the lack of a coat). But these cats have incredibly strong immune systems and very few genetically linked health problems.

If you are thinking of buying or adopting a Sphynx because you are allergic to cat hair, you might want to reconsider your decision. This is because the Sphynx is not a hypoallergenic breed as it produces tiny dander that can cause an allergic reaction.

How Big Do Sphynx get?

Sphinxes are large cats that can be noticed from far away, making them an instant attention grabber. They can be best described as large to medium in size. On average, a healthy Sphynx will weigh between 6 – 12 pounds and reach a height of 12 – 20 inches.

Sphynx Lifespan

The Sphynx is a healthy cat with strong disease resistance; this makes their lives longer than most cats. But due to their genetic mutation, they do not live as long as they should. On average, a Sphynx will live around 8 – 14 years. It is important to ensure your cat is cared for properly and doesn’t stress out too much. You can use toys or catnip to relax your cat if you suspect them to be too stressed.

How Much Does A Sphynx Cost?

The Sphynx is perhaps one of the most expensive cat breeds in the world, with an average price tag that starts from $1,500 and goes as far as $6,000.

Sphynx Personality

The Sphynx is one of the most extroverted cats in the world. They are completely friendly with other pets and kids as well. But if you have kids living in the same house as the Sphynx, ensure that there is always an escape route for the cat in case the playtime becomes too intense for your hairless feline.

The Sphynx is an incredibly intelligent, affectionate, and energetic breed. This high energy and high intelligence combination make the Sphynx appear more dog-like than other breeds. They can also be super friendly like dogs, usually waiting for their owners at the door.

Caring For A Sphynx

Caring for the Sphynx is very important, especially for their skin; This is because they do not have a coat that can protect them from external injury, bugs, mites, etc. Additionally, you also want to ensure that your cat is fed properly and gets adequate exercise throughout the day to ensure their proper health. Keep on reading to find out all you need to know about caring for your Sphynx.

Sphynx Nutrition

The importance of proper diet and nutrition for your cat can not be overemphasized. Most people do not put too much thought into feeding their cats and feeding them dry cat food. But this can have bad consequences for your cat as they might not get all the nutrients necessary to sustain their bodies. It is usually best to feed them a mixture of wet and dry cat food and meat.

How To Groom A Sphynx?

Grooming the Sphynx is not a difficult task, obviously. These cats do not have hair, which you can comb or brush, so that’s one less thing to worry about. But this comes with certain problems.

Usually, the cat’s hair help in removing the extra oils from the scalp, which is important to keep the cat healthy, but the sphynx has to rely on licking to accomplish that. So, to help them with this task, you should bathe them at least once a week to remove the excessive oil build-up.

Sphynx Activity Levels

The Sphynx is a highly active cat that requires a lot of exercise and playtime to exhaust its energies. As kittens, they are hyperactive, and you can find them playing most of the time. But unlike other cats, they do not become lazy as they grow up.

These cats are intelligent, which can be helpful to keep them active as they can play different games with their owners. They also like to go out for walks, if the weather is warm. Remember to put a sweater on them if it is cold outside; remember, they do not have hair to protect them from the cold temperatures.

Sphynx Health Concerns

The Sphynx is a healthy cat breed that does not have many health concerns. But they can develop certain health issues like Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and skin diseases. Take your Sphinx to the vet every 3 – 6 months for regular checkups, and keep on the lookout for anything unusual. Take them to the vet immediately if you suspect they might have a rash or blister on their skin, as it is extremely painful for them and can increase rapidly if not taken care of.
