St Weiler is a hybrid between a Saint Bernard and a Rottweiler. A Bernese Mountain Dog, an Entlebucher Cattle Dog, the Appenzeller Cattle Dog, as well as the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog all hail from Switzerland. This breed is said to have developed from a cross between the Molossus, a Roman Mastiff-type dog, and the local dogs of the Alps.

After Archdeacon Bernard de Menthon came within Saint Bernard Passage in 962 A.D. & erected a Hospice to aid travelers, Saint Bernard began to be isolated from these breeds.

Saint Bernards were employed to defend the monks and watch the land. As a result, these canines evolved a high tolerance for extreme cold and the capacity to search and rescue.
