Thousands of years back, a Swedish Elkhound was formed in Jämtland, a region in Sweden that originally inspired the breed of dog’s inherent name, Jämthund. Throughout their history, they were actively employed in the area.
It is said that they escorted Vikings on their excursions and hunting and functioning as utility puppies. They remained one of the few canines retained by the Sami tribe, an original Finno-Logic people who lived in the Arctic regions from Russia, Finland, Norway, & Sweden.
They share their heritage with other puppies from the area, including the Swedish Lapphund, Lapponian Herder, Finnish Lapphund, and Norwegian Elkhound, which were once thought of as the same breed until 1946.
It took until 2003 for the Federation Cynologique International to publish its breed standard and until 2006 for the United Breed Standard to recognize them.
