A Swedish Elkhound, also recognized as Jämthund, is a long-lived Terrier dog with a long and illustrious history. They are wolf-like breeds and are thought to contain wolf bloodlines, dissimilar to others with similar looks.

It is said that they escorted Vikings on their excursions and hunting and functioning as utility puppies. They remained one of the few canines retained by the Sami tribe, an original Finno-Logic people who lived in the Arctic regions from Russia, Finland, Norway, & Sweden.

They share their heritage with other puppies from the area, including the Swedish Lapphund, Lapponian Herder, Finnish Lapphund, and Norwegian Elkhound, which were once thought of as the same breed until 1946.

It took until 2003 for the Federation Cynologique International to publish its breed standard and until 2006 for the United Breed Standard to recognize them.

Swedish Elkhounds are categorized by longer, broadheads and a tapering muzzle crowned with a large dark nose. Their dark brown, oval-shaped eyes generally have a relaxed yet knowledgeable look.

Swedish Elkhound’s ears are powerful and upright, tapering to a tip and hairy on both the inside and outside.
