In this article, we will discuss everything about the Tervoodle breed, its roots, and its characteristics.

Tervoodle’s History

Tervoodle Information Everything You Need To KnowThe Tervoodle is a mixture of the Poodle and the Belgian Tervuren. This dog breed likes to stay active and has inherited athleticism from its parents. The Tervoodle is a variety of the shepherd dog, and a Belgian Professor first described the breed in the 1800s.

The Tervoodle dog breed became popular because it is an all-rounder. This dog breed was used in different roles, such as pulling carts and herding. In the 20th century, the Tervoodle breed was used for sniffing purposes and rescue work.

Tervoodle Characteristics

The Tervoodle is a large dog and can attain a weight of 60 pounds. This dog has a double coat, and the undercoat is woolly and dense.

The colour of the Tervoodle depends on the dominant parent breed. However, typically, the Tervoodle is grey, red or fawn. The Tervoodle breed has brown eyes, an average snout and erect ears. The dog has a black muzzle, and its body is muscular under the topcoat.

The tail of the breed is curved at the tip and is long. Lastly, the Tervoodle has amber or brown eyes and a black-coloured nose.

How Big Can A Tervoodle Get?

The Tervoodle can weigh up to 60 pounds; however, the average weight is 45 to 50 pounds. The average length of the dog is 24 to 26 inches, while the average height is 22 to 24 inches.

  • At six months: Height: 11.5 inches / Weight: 17.5 pounds (On Average).
  • At twelve months: Height: 15.5 inches / Weight: 40 pounds (On Average).
  • At eighteen months: Height: 19 inches / Weight: 52.5 pounds (On Average).

How Long Can A Tervoodle Live?

Typically, a Tervoodle can have a lifespan of 10 to 14 years. However, with proper care, you can increase the dog’s lifespan.

How Much Does A Tervoodle Cost?

The average price of a Tervoodle puppy can be $ 3000 to 9000. The daily cost of feeding the dog is $ 1.5 to 1.90 and the monthly food expenditure is roughly $ 39 to 52.

Tervoodle Personality/Temperament

The Tervoodle is an energetic dog breed and likes to spend time with the owner. However, the dog can be stand-offish or nervous around strangers. The Tervoodle will bark at people it doesn’t recognize or those that intrude its territory. While the Tervoodle is good-natured, it does require an owner that is firm and fair.

It is best to keep a Tervoodle if you have some experience handling dogs. The main concern is the Tervoodle’s tendency to herd.  This can become a dangerous situation as the dog will try to chase down cars, joggers, cyclists, children and other animals.

However, the Tervoodle can let go of the herding tendency when given proper mental stimulation and exercise.

Tervoodle’s Nutrition

Essentially, dogs need six types of essential nutrients:

  • Water: Without water, the Tervoodle will not be able to function properly, so ensure that the dog drinks plenty of water daily.
  • Fat: Fat promotes a healthy nervous system and protects the internal organs.
  • Protein: Produces energy in the body and creates a solid structure (Bones, muscles, nails, skin).
  • Vitamins: Play a critical role in the dog’s diet and are essential for health and growth maintenance.

To fulfil the dietary requirements of the Tervoodle, you can feed it Wet dog food, Dog Treat and Dog Food Bands.

How Do You Groom A Tervoodle?

The Tervoodle requires moderate maintenance, and you may need to take the dog to the parlour several times for clipping.

The undercoat of the Tervoodle is thick, so it requires regular brushing. Check the coat for ticks, leaves or twigs, and safely remove them. To ensure your dog is properly cleaned, having Dog Brush is not a bad idea, and the Dog Hair Dryer to dry the dog’s hair after a bath.

Activity Levels of a Tervoodle

Since the Tervoodle has a working heritage, the dog requires plenty of daily exercises. On average, the Tervoodle needs two hours of off-leash work.

You can get the dog involved in following a scent trail or fetching. It is not sufficient to give the Tervoodle brief walks. Also, please refrain from leaving the dog in the yard, as it will start digging up the yard.

Health Concerns for Tervoodles

The Tervoodle is a new and rare hybrid breed, so there isn’t enough information about their health concerns. However, you can look at the health issues faced by the parent breeds. Some common health issues are:

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

This is a common health issue for Tervoodles. There are many factors at play here, some are hereditary, and others are related to poor diet and low exercise. Dogs that suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia can develop arthritis.

In some situations, that dog can suffer from excruciating pain and trouble walking properly. For Tervoodles, hip and elbow dysplasia is devastating, as they are energetic and like to remain active.

Cushing’s disease

This is a health concern typically faced by old or middle-aged dogs. The health issue develops over time and is often mistaken for old age.

Cushing’s disease is a disorder, and it happens when the body produces a lot of natural steroid hormones. The symptoms of Cushing’s disease are thin skin, a potbelly, increased thirst and soiling around the house.

Sebaceous Adenitis

This skin condition results in crusting deposits and heavy scales on the skin’s surface. The crusts will peel away with time, leaving behind bald patches and occasionally open wounds. The good news is the condition only affects the skin and not the dog’s overall health.
