Tibalier’s History

Tibalier Information Everything You Need To KnowThe Tibalier is not a purebred; it is a cross between a Tibetan spaniel and a Cavalier King Charles spaniel. While the Tibalier does look like a hunting dog, they don’t have a hunting dog’s prey drive or energy.

The monks developed these dogs thousands of years ago in the Tibetan mountains and were known as ‘Little Lion Dogs .’Like other Tibetan dog breeds, the Tibalier is highly valued and treated with great respect. The dog is never sold but is given as a gift to visiting dignitaries and Royal families.

Tibalier Characteristics

The Tibalier is a small-sized dog breed and comes in different colors such as white, fawn, chocolate, and black. The Tibalier has a medium-sized, broad muzzle. The eyes of the dog are large and dark-colored. The ears are feathered and shaped like a pendant. The ears are set high in the skull and hang from the sides, sometimes even covering the face.

How Big Can A Tibalier Get?

Tibalier is a small-sized dog and can attain weights of 5 to 8 kilos and heights of 12 to 13 inches.

How Long Can A Tibalier Live?

The average life expectancy of a Tibalier is 12 to 17 years.

How Much Does A Tibalier Cost?

There is no set price for a Tibalier; however, the price depends on several factors such as the breeder’s location, pedigree, and lineage. On average, the price of a Tibalier is $ 500 to 4000.

Tibalier Personality/Temperament

The dog is very friendly; it likes to remain active but not all the time and is affectionate towards the owner. The Tibalier responds well to training and is curious by nature.

The Tibalier is a good companion dog, and most people keep it when they lack company. However, this dog has average intelligence, so it takes a while to learn new tricks. Tibalier, like other dogs, likes to bark at things and is not good at handling punishments.

Tibalier’s Nutrition

The Tibalier loves to eat both raw food and dry kibble. This means you can choose any food brand for this dog. However, since every dog is different, you need to test and see if the dog likes the food or not. You can feed the Tibalier food for small dogs and grain-free dog food.

However, you need to ensure that you don’t overfeed the dog. Feed the Tibalier a cup of food, and split the food out into three to four meals. Since the dog is not inclined towards exercising, it can easily gain weight and become obese. These are the foods that the Tabalier should avoid:

  • Chocolate
  • Corn
  • Raw Pork
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Raw Eggs
  • Alcohol
  • Almonds

How Do You Groom A Tibalier?

The Tabailier has a double coat that is smooth and silky. The coat is long at the buttocks, forelegs, ears, and tail. Cavaliers usually shed light, but you need to brush their hair at least two to three times a week to avoid matted hair strands and tangles.

Sometimes, the hair in Tabliers can grow so long that it covers the ears. When this happens, you will need to regularly examine and clean the dog’s ears to prevent ear infections and pests, tick, flea, and bug infestations. When you feel the dog requires a bath, bathe them.

However, before bathing the dog, don’t forget the dog shampoo. Some essential grooming tools you should have:

Activity Levels of a Tibalier

While the Tibalier is a small breed and doesn’t require much exercise, you should still get them to do some form of vigorous exercise daily. These exercises will protect the dog from restlessness and obesity.

The Tibalier can usually handle up to thirty minutes of exercising daily. You need to break the exercises into small sessions throughout the day. Along with games of fetch and brisk walks, you can also get the dog involved in other activities such as track exercises, puzzle games, and agility training. Since the Tibeliar has low exercise requirements, you can easily keep it in an apartment.

Health Concerns for Tibalier

The Tibalier is prone to various health issues, such as eye, respiratory and orthopedic problems. While not every dog will suffer from these health concerns, they can experience a few symptoms as they grow older.

Cherry Eye

This type of inflammation appears in the dog’s eye, usually in the corners. This is quite painful for the Tibalier, and the dog may find it tough to keep the eyes open for long. If your dog is suffering from this condition, you need to apply heat on the affected region as that will soothe the problem. In some cases, the doctors may perform surgery on the dog to fix the issue.

Portosystemic Shunts

The Portosystemic shunts are also known as liver shunts and occur when there is an abnormal blood flow in the river. Researchers and doctors are trying to find tests to diagnose the Portosystemic shunts early to provide the dog treatment as soon as possible.

Hernia

Tibaliers have been diagnosed with a hernia. In some instances, up to six hernias have been diagnosed in the dog. The most common hernias in Tibaliers are scrotal hernia, inguinal hernia, and umbilical hernia. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent the complications related to the hernia.

Patellar Luxation

Since the Tibalier is a small-size dog and doesn’t gain much height, it is prone to knee-related health issues. Patellar luxation is a common knee issue found in dogs and can cause painful limping and lameness. A good doctor or veterinarian can diagnose Patellar luxation quickly and give the dog the treatment.
