Wee-Chon History

Wee Chon Information Everything You Need To KnowThe Wee-Chon is a cross between a West Highland White Terrier & a Bichon Frise that began in the United States. The West Highland White Terrier, or Westie, is a Scottish dog breed. Other Terriers with a similar background include Skye, Dandie Dinmont, Scottish & Cairn.

Westies were employed to hunt foxes and to eliminate rats and other pests. The Westie is said to be connected to a type of little earth dog given to King Louis XVI of France in the 17th century. The West Highland White Terrier’s all-white coat is the result of a 19th-century mishap. The American Breed Standard recognized this breed in 1908.

The Bichon Frise is linked to the Maltese, Havanese, Bolognese, and Coton de Tulear and is said to have originated from the Barbet. The Bichon Frise was imported to France by sailors from the Canary Islands in the 14th century, although the breed is supposed to have originated in Italy.

Even during the reigns of King Francis I of France and King Henry III of England in the 16th century, the breed became extremely popular among royal circles.

Bichons were extremely popular among the Spanish monarchy and were represented by famous painters like Goya. The breed fell out of favor in the late 1800s as they became over-abundant.

After World War I, French breeders rekindled their devotion to the Bichon Frise, & a breed standard was created in 1933. Bichon and Tenerife were the breed names, but the breed was renamed Bichon Frise later that year. The Bichon came to America in 1956, and the American Breed Standards recognized it in 1975.
