Weimshepherd is a hybrid dog breed; it is a loyal, friendly, and family-friendly dog. The dog is an expert hunter and often accompanies its owner during hunting trips.

This article will thoroughly discuss the Weimsheperd and its history, characteristics, temperament, diet, etc.

Weimshepherd’s History

Weimshepherd Information Everything You Need To KnowWhile it is possible that the Weimshepherd originated in Germany, information about the breed is scarce. Designer dogs are usually not registered with kennel clubs, so it is tough to track their origins accurately.

However, we know that the Weimshepherd is a mix of the German Shepherd and the Weimaraner.

The German shepherd originated as a farm dog and would guard and herd livestock. The dog was known for its dependability and independence.

Farmers would leave the dog on its own to protect the farmland. Von Stephanitz developed the German shepherd by breeding the local shepherd dogs in a ‘Structured Manner.’

The Weimaraner originated in Germany and is known for its solemn face and grey and sleek coats. The Weimaraner is a descendent of the Great Dane and German shorthaired pointer.

These dogs were used in hunting because they were tall and could bring down large animals such as deer.

Weimshepherd Characteristics

The Weimshephered has unique facial characteristics, a pair of pendulous and long ears, and green or brown eyes. The eyes are watchful and spaced apart from each other. This dog has a dark-colored nose with prominent whiskers and a long muzzle.

The Weishepherd has a long and thick neck, a deep chest, and a muscular body. The legs are long and muscular, giving them a fast-paced gait. The tail is thick and long and is not docked.

How Big Can A Weimshepherd Get?

The average weight of the Weimshepherd is 27 to 35 kg. The height of the Weimshepherd is 58 to 64 cm.

How Long Can A Weimshepherd Live?

On average, the Weimshepherd can live 10 to 12 years.

How Much Does A Weimshepherd Cost?

The average price of a Weimshepherd puppy is $ 800 to 2000.

Weimshepherd Personality/Temperament

The Weimshepherd is a highly active dog breed. Not only that, but the dog is also intelligent and requires mental stimulation; otherwise, it will get bored. The Weimshepherd is constantly alert and is not recommended for first-time owners.

The Weimshepherd can be rambunctious, have a high prey drive, and are unsuitable for small pets and children. Ideally, the Weimshepherd should be around adults only. The dog bonds easily with its owner and can aggressively protect its territory from strangers.

Weimshepherd’s Nutrition

The Weimshepherd requires at least 2 to 3 cups of quality dog food daily, such as Dr. Tim’s dog food and Dr. Gary’s Best Breed Dog Food. Please do not exceed the recommended quantity as it could lead to obesity.

How Do You Groom A Weimshepherd?

Weimshepherd is a low-maintenance dog breed and doesn’t require daily grooming. These dogs have short and smooth coats, and you only need to brush the coat once a week. However, before you groom the dog, you should have a Dog grooming table and Dog hairdryer.

You will also need to occasionally clip the nails with  Nail clippers for dogs and brush their teeth.

Activity Levels of the Weimshepherd

If you are a fitness fanatic, then the Weimshepherd dog breed is for you. These dogs are so active that they will easily jog out their owner. The Weimshepherd also likes to swim and typically requires an hour or two of exercise.

However, you should keep the Weimshepherd in a fenced area because the dog can easily escape the property without a fence. Ensure that the dog doesn’t chew up the fence and starts digging up the ground.

Health Concerns for Weimshepherd

While there is no doubt that hybrid dogs are beautiful, several health conditions can affect them. You will need to monitor the dog at all times and watch out for these conditions:

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • GDV (Gastric Dilatation Volvulus)
  • DM (Degenerative Myelopathy)
  • Atopic Dermatitis
  • Pancreatic
  • Elbow Dysplasia

Let’s briefly go through each condition:

Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia is an orthopedic condition and one of the most difficult challenges the Weimshepherd dog breed faces. This is an issue that owners and breeders need to take seriously to ensure that the Weimshepherd breed has a happy and healthy future.

The good news is, Hip Dysplasia is easy to diagnose, as you only need to get a few scans and x-rays done. Screening helps prevent Hip Dysplasia.

Elbow Dysplasia

Elbow Dysplasia is a serious condition in dogs and leads to lameness. This condition is common in all types of dog breeds. Usually, dogs have their limp on the front legs, and they can also be seen nodding their heads when they are suffering from Elbow Dysplasia.

Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV)

Bloat in dogs is, also known as GDV (Gas Dilatation Volvulus), is a serious health issue and, if left untreated, can be fatal for the dog. This condition occurs when the dog’s stomach fills with fluid, food, or gas. These elements twist the stomach, causing GDV. GDV appears with a warning and progresses rapidly.

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)

Degenerative Myelopathy is a progressive condition and is often found in older dogs. In this condition, dogs cannot control their hind legs and walk properly due to spinal cord degeneration. Unfortunately, there is no cure or treatment for Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), so if a dog is suffering from the condition, all you can do is comfort him.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis is a skin condition that causes chronic discomfort and itching. Atopic Dermatitis can mimic several skin-related conditions such as Flea Allergy Dermatitis and Sarcoptic Mange. Once Atopic Dermatitis is diagnosed, you will need to manage it throughout the dog’s life because it doesn’t have a cure.

Pancreatic

Pancreatic is a condition in which the pancreas and organs near it develop inflammation. This condition can be serious if left untreated. If diagnosed early, Pancreatic can be cured through rest and diet. However, serious cases often lead to hospitalization.
