Wel-Chon is a small-sized hybrid dog breed and is lively, playful and energetic. This dog is easy to train and is a family-friendly canine. Wel-Chons thrive in all types of environments and enjoy following their owner.

This article will detail information related to Wel-Chon, such as its diet, history, characteristics etc.

Wel-Chon’s History

Wel Chon Information Everything You Need To KnowSince the Wel-Chon is a new hybrid dog breed, its history is not well known. We know that the Wel-Chon is a mix of Welsh terrier and Bichon Frises. The Welsh Terrier also referred to as ‘Welshie’, is an old breed of terriers developed in Wales.

The Welsh terrier was primarily used for hunting foxes, rats, badgers and other animals. The origins of the Welsh terrier go as far as the 1500s. Experts believe the Welsh terrier is descended from the Old English Black and Tan Terrier.

Despite being an old dog breed, the Welsh terrier was only recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) in 1888. The Bichon frise is also an old dog breed and was probably developed in the Mediterranean region of Italy.

Records also show that the 14th century, The Bichon frise was brought to France from Tenerife. It is believed that the Bichon frise is a mix between the Poodle and Barbet and is also related to the Maltese, Havanese and Calton de Tulear dog breeds.

The AKC recognized the Bichon frise as a breed in 1972.

Wel-Chon Characteristics

The Wel-Chon has a thick coat that protects it from harsh weather conditions. The outer coat may have a wiry texture like the Welsh terrier or curly like the Bichon frise. The dog’s undercoat is smooth and soft.

Typically the Wel-Chon has a cream or white colour but can sometimes develop patches of tan or black.

Despite having a lot of fur, the Wel-Chon is a low-shedder. The dog has a square, sturdy build and a confident pose. The paws have black pads and are round, whereas the legs are straight. The nose is black-coloured, and the eyes are dark.

How Big Can A Wel-Chon Get?

The average weight for a male is 8 to 10 kg (18 to 23 pounds), and the average height is 14 to 16 inches (36 to 41 cm). The females typically weigh 9 kg (20.5 pounds) and are 13 to 15 inches (33 to 38 cm) tall.

How Long Can A Wel-Chon Live?

The average lifespan of a Wel-Chon dog is 12 to 15 years.

How Much Does A Wel-Chon Cost?

The cost depends on several factors, such as the reliability of the breeder and the pedigree. However, on average, the price of a Wel-Chon puppy is $ 700 to 1000.

Wel-Chon Personality/Temperament

The Wel-Chon is an energetic and happy dog that loves to play with its owner. The terrier traits in Wel-Chon make it a superb watchdog and is alerted to even the slightest changes in the environment.

This breed is good with kids, as they feed on youthful energy and are playful.

However, since they have adopted several traits from terriers, the Wel-Chon breed has a strong prey drive, and the dog will constantly chase small-sized animals. Try to keep the dog in a fenced area to protect other animals.

Wel-Chon Nutrition

Since the Wel-Chon is a small-size breed, you will only need to feed it 1/2 to 1/5 cups of good quality dog food such as Dog Chow dog food and Dogswell dog food. Ensure the food is divided into two portions.

Don’t increase the quantity of food, as that might lead the dog to obesity.

How Do You Groom A Wel-Chon?

The Wel-Chon has a lot of fur on its body; however, what is surprising is that it is a low-shredding breed and is a perfect choice for those with allergies. Nonetheless, you will need to use a dog brush to clean the coat weekly.

Since the Wel-Chon sweats a lot like the Welsh terrier, it can have a smelly coat. Don’t forget to use stain and odour remover while grooming the dog.

You will also need to clean the ears every week with the help of Dog ear cleaners to prevent infections. Trim the nails and brush the dog’s teeth at least once a week.

Activity Levels of the Wel-Chon

We-Chon is an active dog breed and likes to spend time with its owner.

These dogs are moderately active and require only 30 minutes of exercise daily. The Wel-Chon also craves attention from its owner and is a highly intelligent dog, always willing to participate in agility competitions and obedience training.

The Wel-Chon is well suited for all environments; however, if you live in an apartment, you must ensure the dog gets plenty of exercises.

The thick coat of the Wel-Chon means that it is well-suited for the cold climate.

Health Concerns for Wel-Chon

Unfortunately, the Wel-Chon is not immune to diseases, and several health conditions can affect the breed. Below we have given a shortlist of a few health conditions:

  • Skin Allergies
  • Epilepsy
  • Flea Allergy
  • Canine Glaucoma

Let’s briefly discuss each condition:

Skin Allergies

Dogs are susceptible to skin allergies, and these are some of the most common skin allergies that affect dogs:

  • Food-related allergies
  • Environmental allergies
  • Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Some common symptoms of skin allergies are face rubbing, excessive licking, loss of fur, irritated skin and swelling.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder commonly found in dogs and affects roughly 0.75 % of the canine population globally. Epilepsy refers to a heterogeneous condition characterized by unprovoked seizures that develop an abnormality in the brain.

Flea Allergy

FAD (Flea Allergy Dermatitis) is a severe reaction caused by a bite inflicted by the flea. This allergy can cause intense pain and itching in the skin. When left untreated, FAD can lead to secondary skin infections.

The only cure for Flea allergy is to control the fleas on the dog and remove them from the dog’s environment.

Canine Glaucoma

Canine Glaucoma is an eye condition in dogs and, when left untreated, can progress rapidly. This condition can cause retinal and nerve damage and affects approximately 40 % of the canine population.
