Westie-Laso’s History

Westie Laso Information 768x1024The West-Lasoo is a mix of the West Highland white terrier and Lhasa Apso. Since the West-Laso is a hybrid dog breed, its history is unknown.

However, we know that the West Highland white terrier was bred in the 1700s in Scotland. The dog’s main function was to hunt small animals such as otters, rats and foxes.

Despite being a small or medium-sized dog, the West Highland white terrier is incredibly brave and was brought to the United States in the 20th century.

In 1908, the AKC (American Kennel Club) officially recognized the West Highland white terrier as a breed.

The Lhasa Apso has a longer history than the ‘Westie’ and was initially bred for companionship.

The Lhasa Apso probably originated from small mountain wolves roughly 1000 years ago. Tibetan monks held these dogs in high regard and kept them separate from other dog breeds.

These dogs were used to guard the temples, and in the 1900s, they made their way to the United States and England. The AKC recognized the Lhasa Apso in 1935.

The dog can even become comical with his owner or those he is comfortable with.

Health Concerns for Westie-Laso

Generally, living for fifteen years, the Westie-Laso is a healthy dog breed. However, the dog can still fall sick. These are some health concerns that you need to be aware of:

  • Legg-Calves-Perthes
  • Patellar Luxation
  • Cherry Eye
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis

Legg-Calves-Perthes

This is a deformity in the hip joint. The condition causes a decrease in the blood supply to the femur bone until the bone becomes deformed and collapses.

This condition can lead to inflammation or arthritis of the hip joint. The reasons why Legg-Calves-Perthes occurs are still unclear.

Patellar Luxation

Patella luxation is a condition that affects the dog’s knee cap. The knee cap is known as the patella, and luxation refers to a condition in which there is a dislocation of a bone at the joint.

The knee typically slides out of its original place in this condition and causes severe pain. This can force the dog to cripple; however, most dogs suffering from this condition typically live a normal and healthy life.

Cherry Eye

Cherry eye, also referred to as Prolapse, is a condition in which dogs develop the third eyelid inside the lower eyelid. The third eyelid protects the eyes during fighting or hunting.

This third eyelid also consists of a gland that produces the eye’s tear film. When this gland pops out or prolapses, it is known as Cherry Eye.

Pulmonary Fibrosis

Pulmonary Fibrosis is a respiratory condition that was only discovered approximately 15 years ago. Some signs of Pulmonary Fibrosis are increased respiratory rate, exercise intolerance, shortness of breath, lethargy and coughing.

This condition is typically fatal, and most dogs die due to lung failure.
