The Weston is a hybrid dog breed; it has a small stature and loves to mingle and mix with other dogs. This dog is non-aggressive, which makes it a perfect companion.

However, before you buy a Weston puppy, go through the information discussed below.

Weston Terrier’s History

Weston Information 1024x682The Weston is a designer dog, which means it is a mix of two different dog breeds. The Weston is a mix of the West Highland white terrier and the Coton de Tulear.

Since the Weston is a hybrid, its history is largely unknown. However, we know that the West Highland white terrier has Scottish origins; it was bred in the 1700s for hunting purposes.

The West Highland white terrier, better known as the ‘Westie’, was recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) in 1906.

Despite being a mix of the Westie, due to its non-aggressive nature, the Weston is not a good hunter. On the other hand, the Coton de Tulear was first found on the island of Madagascar several centuries ago.

The temperament and traits of the Coton de Tulear prove that it has African origins. The dog has an easy-going nature and is regarded as being extremely gentle.

The Weston is less popular than its parents because it is a relatively new breed.

Weston Characteristics

The Weston is small in stature, it has floppy ears and a long cut, a trait it has inherited from the Coton de Tulear.

The shape of the dog’s body is slender, and the coat comes in different colors such as cream, black and brown.

Sometimes the coat might have white pigmentations like the Westie. The Weston has a pair of plushy eyes hidden underneath the fur. Usually, the Weston possesses a bushy tail; it has a black-colored nose and brown eyes.

  • Female: 9 to 11 inches (23 to 28 cm)

How Long Can A Weston Live?

The average lifespan of a Weston is 12 to 16 years.

How Much Does A Weston Cost?

The average cost of a West of Argyll puppy is $ 900 to 1200.

Weston Personality/Temperament

The Weston is easygoing, especially when interacting with other dogs and children. The Weston is highly sociable, well-behaved, and doesn’t possess aggressive attitude or personality traits.

This doesn’t mean that the Weston is a lazy dog because they are packed with energy like their parents.

However, the Weston is better at channeling its energy than the Coton de Tulear and the Westie. The dog is even-tempered, highly intelligent, and displays calmness when interacting with kids.

While the Weston is very intelligent, it doesn’t like being left alone, as they are naturally sociable.

Weston Nutrition

You need to feed the Weston high-quality dog food such as food for small dogs or grain-free dog food. You will need to feed the Weston ½ to 1.5 cups of dog food daily.

You can also feed the dog organic dog food if you are uncomfortable using commercial varieties. Please divide the meal into several portions because Weston is prone to weight gain.

How Do You Groom A Weston?

The Weston possesses a straight and long coat that you must clean daily to keep it healthy. The Weston doesn’t shed much, but the coat needs to be brushed frequently.

You should always keep a dog brush at home for grooming sessions. You need to clip the nails as well on a weekly basis with nail clippers for dogs.

However, we must warn that sensitive nerves run through the dog’s paws, so don’t do it if you don’t know how to clip the nails.

Activity Levels of the Weston

Like its parents, the Weston requires moderate exercise daily to burn energy and stay healthy.

The Weston is not an overly energetic or aggressive dog breed, so you don’t need to get him involved in physical activities for a long period of time. The Weston only needs up to 30 minutes of exercise daily.

The Weston loves to play and run whenever it gets the opportunity. However, ensure the dog does all the running in a fenced or enclosed area. Typically, the Weston needs at least six miles of walking weekly.

Health Concerns for Weston

Usually, the Weston is a healthy dog breed, as it lives for up to 16 years. However, the dog is not immune to falling sick. These are some health concerns that you need to be aware of:

  • Legg-Calves-Perthes
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Dry Eye
  • Copper Hepatopathy
  • Valvular Heart Disease

Legg-Calves-Perthes

This is a deformity in the hip joint. The condition causes a decrease in the blood supply to the femur bone until the bone becomes deformed and collapses.

This condition can lead to inflammation or arthritis of the hip joint. The reasons why Legg-Calves-Perthes occurs are still unclear.

Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia, also known as Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD), is a condition in dogs that occurs as they grow and can lead to loose fit or instability of the hip joint.

Hip joint instability can lead to several symptoms such as progressive joint changes, limb dysfunction, and hip pain.

Dry Eye

The Weston has inherited this condition from the Westie. A dry eye is a condition in which there is a lack of tear production in the eyes.

This leads to itchy eyes. If left untreated, dry eyes can be distressful for the dog.

Copper Hepatopathy

Copper Hepatopathy is a serious condition caused when there is an abnormal accumulation of copper in the liver. This can lead to scarring of Cirrhosis and progressive liver damage.

The condition usually occurs due to genetically-based abnormal copper metabolism.

Valvular Heart Disease

Valvular heart disease is a heart condition in dogs caused by the thickening and breaking down of the heart’s valves. To understand the effects of this condition, the doctor will assess the dog’s heart.
