Wetterhoun is a Dutch dog breed, and its name translates to ‘Water Dog’ in Dutch. This dog was developed approximately four centuries ago in the Dutch province of Friesland.
The breed is also known as the Dutch Spaniel or Otterhound; however, technically, it is not a Spaniel. Experts believe that the Wetterhoun is a relative of the extinct dog breed: Old Water-Dog.
The Wetterhoun probably has been bred with other Indigenous Frisian breeds as well. The Waterhoun has been used as a watchdog, water retriever, and gun dog.
During the 2nd World War, the breed nearly went extinct, but now the number of the Wetterhoun is growing. In 2006, the UKC (United Kennel Club) officially recognized the Wetterhoun.
Wetterhoun Characteristics
The Wetterhoun is a well-balanced breed and is a medium-sized dog. Usually, the dog is less than a foot tall at the shoulders and has a thick build.
The nose is well-developed, and the head is wide. The tight-fitting lips sit in front of the straight muzzles. The eyes are oval-shaped and slant slightly, which gives them a grim expression.
The ears typically lay flat alongside the head and are set above the eye line. The dog comes with a curly and dense coat with a coarse texture.
The coat comes in different colors, such as brown, black and white. The coat usually has extensive white markings. The tail is typically curled over the back.
