Wetterhoun’s History

Wetterhoun Information 1024x694Wetterhoun is a Dutch dog breed, and its name translates to ‘Water Dog’ in Dutch. This dog was developed approximately four centuries ago in the Dutch province of Friesland.

The breed is also known as the Dutch Spaniel or Otterhound; however, technically, it is not a Spaniel. Experts believe that the Wetterhoun is a relative of the extinct dog breed: Old Water-Dog.

The Wetterhoun probably has been bred with other Indigenous Frisian breeds as well. The Waterhoun has been used as a watchdog, water retriever, and gun dog.

During the 2nd World War, the breed nearly went extinct, but now the number of the Wetterhoun is growing. In 2006, the UKC (United Kennel Club) officially recognized the Wetterhoun.

The ears typically lay flat alongside the head and are set above the eye line. The dog comes with a curly and dense coat with a coarse texture.

The Wetterhoun is one of the healthiest dog breeds globally, but that doesn’t make it bulletproof. There are a number of health issues that you should be aware of:

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome
  • Epilepsy
  • Alopecia

Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia, also known as Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD), is a condition in dogs that occurs as they grow and can lead to loose fit or instability of the hip joint.

Hip joint instability can lead to several symptoms such as progressive joint changes, limb dysfunction, and hip pain.

Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome (SCIC)

SCIC is a type of genetic disorder commonly found in canines. This syndrome renders them unable to fight respiratory, eye, and ear infections in dogs.

Typically, the symptoms appear in the dog when he is about 6 months old or younger. This is a fatal illness, and most dogs will die within six months. The cause of death is usually fallen puppy syndrome.

When parasitic, fungal, or bacterial infections invade dogs suffering from this syndrome, their immune system cannot respond. The suffering dogs don’t have proper antibodies to fight the infection.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a type of neuroglial disorder commonly found in dogs. Epilepsy is so common that it affects nearly 0.75 % of the dog population.

This is a heterogeneous condition and is characterized by the presence of seizures, which occur due to an abnormality in the brain. Epilepsy can also be inherited, stem from an unknown cause, or structural brain issues.

Alopecia

Alopecia is a skin condition, and it is the complete or partial hair loss in several areas of the dog’s body. However, hair loss is usually a symptom; there is an underlying condition as well. If the dog is scratching the area constantly and has hair loss, you need to take him to the vet as quickly as possible.
