Wheatador is a hybrid dog breed; it is an energetic dog and was originally bred to be a companion. This dog is easy to train and enjoys playing with its owner.

This article will go through different aspects of the Wheatador, such as its diet, size, origins, and more.

Wheatador’s History

Wheatador Information 500x781The Wheatador is a Designer dog, so its origins are largely unknown. However, the Wheatador is a mix of two dog breeds: Labrador retriever and Soft-Coated Wheaten terrier.

In Ireland, the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier was developed in the 17th century for the poor classes. The poor Irish classes weren’t allowed to keep hounds, but they needed a farm dog they could trust.

Due to this need, the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier was developed and was used for hunting and herding purposes. This terrier is related to other dogs, such as the Kerry blue terrier and Irish terrier.

The AKC (American Kennel Club) recognized the Soft-Coated Wheaten terrier in 1973. The fisherman first bred the Labrador retriever in the 1800s in Newfoundland.

The main purpose of this breed was to retrieve the nets and fish. The Labrador retriever is a descendant of a larger Newfoundland dog breed.

The Labrador retriever is trainable; it is always looking to please its owner and has an easy-going nature. This is why the Lab is well-suited for rescue and service operations.

Wheatador Characteristics

The Wheatador is a medium-sized dog with a sturdy build. The dog is also incredibly athletic and has strong paws and legs. Since the parents of the Wheatador have different coats, the dog can come in various types of coats.

Usually, the Wheatador is a blend of its parents and has a chocolate, fawn, golden, or black-colored coat. The eyes of the dog are brown, hazel, or light yellow.

The dog has a scissor bite, a trait seen in both the parent breeds. The Wheatador can have the Soft-Coat Wheaten terrier’s forward-oriented eyes or the Lab’s eyes that fold flat in the skull.

How Big Can A Wheatador Get?

The average weight of a Wheatador is 40 to 60 Pounds (Male) and 35 to 48 Pounds (Female). The average height is 22 to 24 inches (Male) and 21 to 23 inches (Female)>

How Long Can A Wheatador Live?

The average lifespan of a Wheatador is 12 to 15 years.

How Much Does A Wheatador Cost?

Typically, a Wheatador puppy costs $ 800 to 1000.

Wheatador Personality/Temperament

The Wheatador is an energetic and fun-loving dog breed that loves to play with its owner. Since the Wheatador is extremely friendly, it is not a good watchdog as it is quick to befriend strangers.

While the dog is intelligent, it can also be destructive if it doesn’t receive enough physical exercise. If there is a reward involved, the Wheatador is receptive to training.

The Wheatador is strong-willed and likes to be independent, a trait it has inherited from the Wheaten terrier. The dog likes to play with kids, but supervision is needed, as the Wheatador can be mouthy sometimes.

Wheatador’s Nutrition

The Wheatador requires at least 2.5 to 3.5 cups of quality dog food every day. While most people feed the Wheatador dry dog food, you can also feed the dog Grain-free dog food and organic dog food.

You should always divide the meal into several portions and watch the quantity, as overeating can lead to obesity in dogs.

How Do You Groom A Wheatador?

Both parents of the Wheatador are low-maintenance dog breeds, and the same is true for the Wheatador. However, sometimes the Wheatador’s coat may have wavy locks.

If that is the case, so will need to brush the coat every week with a dog brush. Frequent brushing will decrease shedding.

The Wheatador has sensitive skin, so it doesn’t need a weekly bath. The Wheatador is a mild to moderate shedder, making the dog hypoallergenic.

The Wheatador can also be allergic to fleas like the Soft-Coated Wheaten terrier. Lastly, please clean the teeth with Toothbrushes for dogs.

Activity Levels of the Wheatador

Both parent breeds of the Wheatador are highly active, and so is the Wheatador. The dog requires at least an hour of physical exercise daily and plenty of space to run.

If you don’t provide the dog chances to exercise daily, he can become destructive and mischievous. While the Wheatador does well in all climates, it prefers cold weather.

Health Concerns for Wheatador

The Wheatador is prone to several health conditions, and you should be aware of those conditions:

  • Epilepsy
  • Flea Allergy
  • Protein Wasting Disease
  • Cold Tail

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a type of neuroglial disorder commonly found in dogs. Epilepsy is so common that it affects nearly 0.75 % of the dog population.

This is a heterogeneous condition and is characterized by the presence of seizures, which occur due to an abnormality in the brain.

Epilepsy can also be inherited, stem from an unknown cause, or structural brain issues.

Flea Allergy

Flea allergy, also known as Flea Allergy Dermatitis, is a severe allergic reaction to a flea bite. Dogs can develop this allergy and usually have an extreme reaction to some proteins in the Flea’s saliva.

The flea injects the saliva into the dog’s skin during feeding. Some dogs are so allergic to a flea bite that they experience an abrupt reaction.

If left untreated, this allergy can make dogs feel miserable, and it comes with inflammation and excessive itching, which can also damage the dog’s skin.

Protein Wasting Disease

Protein-Losing Enteropathy is not a specific condition; it is a group of several conditions that can cause protein loss in the dog’s bloodstream.

When the body works normally, the protein in the GI tract is broken down and absorbed by the body. When this condition occurs in dogs, protein loss may take place.

Usually, the dog needs to be hospitalized for this condition.

Cold Tail

A Cold tail occurs when the dog overuses its tail and has sprained it. The coccygeal muscle, found in tails, is strained, which helps the dog wag its tail. This sprained tail is known as a Cold tail.
